I'm about to graduate and I'd like to work overseas. Can anyone help? |
I'm about to get my BA in English with pre law, anthropology, and history minors. I want to take a year (maybe more) before law school to work overseas, ideally in an English-speaking country. How hard would it be to obtain employment in New Zealand or Australia? Anywhere really, I don't care. And I don't care what type of work. Just something that doesn't demean the human condition and still pays the bills. Any and all advice would be appreciated. --I know there are job-placing agencies, but which of them are successful? Most look like tourist scams. And I know about applying for a visa... I'm looking for information regarding the act of procuring employment, the difficulty included therein, etc. If there are any potential employers who happen across this, please contact me. Many thanks!
*I'm American, male, and 22, if any of that makes a difference. |

im in NZ atm, so ill tell you a tad about that, like everywhere else NZ is in the middle of an economic crisis, so not too many jobs around and most are going to NZ'ers who have NZ experience etc. ur best bid to get a job here would be to make contacts through an employment agency and go from there, about a visa, when you get a job, get your employer to send you a work visa so you are legal in the cuntry as long as you are employed
also NZ has a brilliant website
www.seek.co.nz
all the NZ jobs available (well the ones that the company bothered to advertise)
good luck, ull love NZ if you come here

Try and find an agency.
I don't want to be negative but a BA in English isn't highly valued in the NZ employment environment (although it should be). |

Americans under the age of 30 can get a work visa through an agreement with the US. It's called a working holiday and it's easy to get (and was free when I did it in 2005) through the NZ Embassy in D.C. It allows you to work for any employer and is good for a year. NZ has pretty low unemployment, but we are at the beginning of our economic crisis and people are beginning to be laid off here and there. If you're legal to work, you shouldn't have much problem - we have been constantly expanding at my work! The best option is to contact/harass the temp agencies until they find you something and start from there. If you go for whatever job they start you out with and show them you're reliable, they'll give you better ones after that! And the jobs you get depend on where you'll live as well (I recommend Wellington). Many of the temp agencies are the same ones they have all over the world. I haven't heard of any NZ tourist scams! |
