Queenstown is definitely the place to go. You'll have to catch a short flight down to Queenstown but it usually isn't that expensive. You can ski two different resort, Coronet Peak and The Remarkables. Both have a variety of terrain, from beginner to advanced/intermediate. There are shuttles that leave from most hotels in town to the resorts. Queenstown also has a lot going on -- white water rafting, jet boating, bungee jumping, and a great nightlife scene. It's basically a town dedicated to the pursuit of adrenaline!
I would also recommend leaving your equipment behind and renting. Daily rentals are pretty cheap and you will appreciate the lighter baggage.
If you can't get away from Christchurt, try Mt. Hutt. It's only an hour drive by car. Not as good as the resorts around Queenstown but at least you'll be skiing.
Have fun!

Go to the Queenstown area. That is the best skiing there. They have all levels of skiing.

I suggest Mt.Ruapehu, It's perfect for skiing and much closer to Auckland than Queenstown, However Queenstown is more beautiful and interesting.
