Auckland is a great place to start as it is up there with most cities of the world. The real beauty being that you can be in the wilderness in a very short time. Head south to Waikato & Lake Taupo for some amazing scenery. If you have some time left over try & head to the South Island where the scenery is spectacular & dramatic.
