I'm looking to buy a house in Christchurch, NZ what suburbs are affordable and have good publice transport? |
I'm looking to buy a house in christchurch, NZ. I want somewhere near the city centre that is affordable and also has a good public transport system as i can't drive. Walking distance from the city would be best? Any suggestions? I have no idea where are the nice places! |

Riccarton should fit your requirements. Good commercial and residential mix plus on main bus route. Inner city living has its disadvantages while Riccarton is barely a couple of kms from city. |

St Albans, merivale, richmond, avonside, sydenham, phillipstown and addington are all closest to the city centre. the nicest of those suburbs would be St Albans or Merivale in my opinion, however the other suburbs would all potentially be cheaper. check out www.trademe.co.nz and go to the property part of that, its the easiest and most comprehensive way to search for properties / get an idea of prices. As for public transport the city is well equipped with a bus service, there would be buses going into the city exchange from any suburb |

Christchurch has a good bus service. See http://www.metroinfo.org.nz/timetable_maps.html
The biggest real estate site is http://www.realestate.co.nz/ but it only takes listings from Real Estate agents so checking http://www.trademe.co.nz is a good idea as well. A site just for real estate in Canterbury is http://www.realtor.co.nz/
Christchurch is also a very "cycle-friendly" town so if you like cycling you will love Christchurch. |

Why are you looking to buy in a city that you don't know? Surely you would rent a place for a few months to see what areas you like and dislike.
Other people can give ideas and advice, but making up your own mind by spending time there first seems a sensible start. |
