I am hiking Through New Zealand (not on a tour) need some help?

if you are wanting to hike some of new zealands tarmping tracks then this website http://doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/tracks-and-walks/
should provide you with all the information you need.
There are several amazing tracks in NZ, all of which have huts and / or tent sites available for use on. For the "great walks" you must book in advance as the huts get quite full during the walking season (late October-April).
the South island would be the best place to begin as it has most of NZ's most notable tracks (Kepler, Milford, Abel Tasman track, Route burn track, Heaphy track etc)

A Month? You really need 3 months to do the South Island properly
But as mentioned meet the locals in smaller towns, they are a mine of info and can show you parts of my country a mainstream tourist will never see
All depends on what you are into but if Tramping/Hiking Id head straight to Stewart Island, 30km of roads and over 300km of walking track, a tramp around the Island will take about 2 weeks
But be prepared as south of Stewart Island is nothing but wild and wooly ocean till you reach the Antartic

Depends what interests you.

Busy with lots of people that wouldn't give you the time of day, or a smaller more welcoming town that would invite into their home.

Your choice, no matter where you go in New Zealand there is always an adventure to be had.

Be sure to always drop into the local pub. The longer you stay the more people you meet. Lol

I was just there in March and did the Kiwi Experience tour on the south island.
We started in Christchurch (there's an airport near there). We stayed at Base Backpackers, it's in a very cute part of town near Cathedral square:

We made our way to the best little town (in our opinion, there wasn't much to do there but it was beautiful) called Kaikoura. You can swim with dolphins there.. dolphins! (but we didn't :) ) The views around the town are amazing.Fish and chips are awesome.

We saw seals along the coast...

We kept driving (and I've forgotten the order) to lots of towns and the funnest was Queenstown (you can go on a luge down a part of the mountain), you can kayak, walk around the city, shop, it's gorgeous.

You might want to stop by Lake Wanaka, a beautiful lake.

Cape foulwind is awesome.

I would suggest going with a friend, you'd be pretty lonely, but if you're a social person you could meet people pretty quickly on a bus tour. (like Kiwi Experience). With the tour you can stay in the town as long as you like and then get back on the next bus. You could do a tour of the North and the South islands in a month possibly, but it would be very quick.
