I recently spend four weeks in NZ including New Year in Auckland. I spent most of my time in the south island (as my Mum lives there) in a camper van! It was great because it gave great flexibility.

In the south island, I would recommend:
- if you like walking and kayaking, visit the Abel Tasman national park, near Nelson,
- if you like mountains, do a "heli-hike" on the Franz Josef glacier
- if you like "adventure", visit Queenstown and do "jet boating" and other crazy stuff. It's also a very beautiful place.
- if you like wine, visit the Montana winery near Blenheim

In Auckland, I would recommend
- watching the sunset while having a beer/dinner in the Viaduct harbour
- take the ferry over to Devonport, climb the Mt Victoria volcano. Great views of the harbour and city.
- watch the nutters jumping off the sky tower, go for a coffee in the restaurant in it for the best view.

In the north island, rotorua is the place to go. But I havent been there yet!

I was in NZ in Oct 2006 for 4 weeks. For about NZ$120 you can fly from Auckland to Christchurch. We spent 4 weeks exploring the South Island and although we thought we would only need 3 and a week on the North Island, we were very much mistaken. I've heard loads of great things about the North Island but everyone says the South is better - it really was Middle Earth! See if you can persuade your brother to go south for a week, you won't regret it!!

The main places I want to visit when I get to see Auckland again are the Auckland War Memorial Museum, Kelly Tarltons(sp?) Underwarter World and One Tree Hill. Travel south and you can go to Coromandel Forest Park, where I have Kauaeranga Valley on my to do list (there is a working model of a Kauri Dam there).

It all depends on the kinds of things you like to do.

The Holy Trinity Cathedral is in Auckland and that looks amazing. If you're around Wellington any time you should check out the zoo too. Really you should ask your brother what's good since he lives there and he'll know.
