I don't want to leave South Africa but I have no choice I think? |
I love living here but its just downright dangerous now. my wife was brutally raped and tortured 2 years ago in a home invasion. ive been car jacked at gun point 3 times. my 10 year old son was shot in the arm when he was caught in a cross fire bewtween gang in the middle of a mall! our house has been robbed 7 times and we have very tight secrerity on our house. i have lost 6 loved ones to murder including my daughter. violence! im so sick of it. i know there is something else out there. i was thinking of moving to new zealand or australia? which one is safer? i know crime happens in these countries for sure but it cant possibly be as bad as here?
i want out! should i move?
which country is best? Additional Details looking for a peaceful place. it doesnt have to be a city. i want to live somewhere beautiful and relativly peaceful. |

That sounds like a terrible situation to be in, but really if it's unsafe there, you don't really have much of choice but to leave. I have many South African friends here in New Zealand, and many have very similar reasons to yours for leaving S.A. They do miss their homeland of course, but I think in many ways New Zealand is quite similar to S.A, only more safe. And there is a large South African population here too... and we even have South African shops with South African food and products!
New Zealand is renowned for being a beautiful and peaceful country. We don't join wars, have little violence and are a very open-minded people.
If you would like somewhere in a nice quiet suburb I definitley recommend the North Shore... that's where most of the South Africans are actually. But there is also more rural options only 10 minutes away from the North Shore, and most of the country is rural too. Oh, and the North Shore is lined by beautiful beaches!!
Australia is also a very nice country- pretty much the same as New Zealand but bigger and has more dangerous animals... not that probably concerns someone from Africa! Aus is also more like a mini America than New Zealand... But other than that.. very very similar.
I wish you all the best with your decision. Good luck. |

To answer your question about moving, I say definitely. Although South Africa may be your home and long lost love, I really feel if the violence has reached the level you have described above you NEED to find a new place to settle for the safety of your family. As for where to move, it's up to you. Both Australia and New Zealand are inviting countries that have a great atmosphere (unfortunatly I don't know that much about either, so i can't give that much advice...) My question to you is this; have you considered the U.S? I realize that it would be a big switch from a life in South Africa, but it would provide the 'relatively peaceful' atmosphere you want. I currently live in Oregon, which I have to say is one of the most beautiful places in the world. At any rate, good luck for finding a place and sorry for your losses. |

I have a contact on here that just moved from South Africa to NZ, contact her - am sure she will help you.... she's just been through it all.. she also told me all the horror stories she encountered there. NZ is great - I used to live there myself for years.

Yes you really should move!! I live in New Zealand and it is a beautiful country, never been to Australia so cant really compare it. However, in Auckland there is a strong South African presence, especially in the North Shore area and in Howick (East Auckland). Although both area's are suburban Auckland's scenic views and many bush settings give you a lot to offer.
If your looking for a place where the scenery is the focal point with the peaceful surroundings then Auckland City is not the place for you, although it is virtually surrounded by beach's, there is still the hustle and bustle of the city life, and the traffic!! The most beautiful area of New Zealand would have to be the South Island, where a mountain range is always close at hand, partically Queenstown and Wanaka are the best scenic destinations. They are also very touristy and can be pricey.
Christchurch is a very "English" city, with a slow pace and a country air to it. Auckland has a lot to offer in way of Job's and Houses, so settling down would be no problem.
Many people think that New Zealand is a safe haven, this used to be the case, however the past 5 years the crime rate has gone up significantly.
Peacefull area's in Auckland are easy to come by though, partically in the outer parts. In as little as 30 minutes out of Auckland CBD you can experiance the peaceful and tranquil life your seeking.
Wish you all the best in you move, it sounds like you really need it. |

New Zealand. Definitely.
I know how you feel. 3 of my teachers in school are South African.
They told me all about South Africa. Its extremely dangerous they said. If you are a woman alone in a car at night and there is a red light at a traffic light, you normally do not stop because of the risk of getting hijacked. Thats very sad. Also my teacher told me that it is belived that if you have aids to rape a virgin and it will go away. Thats incredibly sad!
I really hope you come to my beautiful country and get a big break away from all that violence once and for all.
Enjoy it. (my teachers love it, they said it was the best thing that happened to them) |

There are lots of South Africans in NEw Zealand, especially in Auckland.
It is very easy for a South African to get residency here. I have a friend who has just moved here earlier this year and already he is a resident. He said it would have taken a lot longer to get that in Australia as he also looked at both countries and decided on New Zealand. |
