i think you can make good money with fruit-picking jobs (check backpacker magazines). with the money you can buy a ticket to Oz and enjoy the beautiful country and the lovely people. new zealand is amazingly beautiful too... why not travel here first? hitchhiking doesn't cost anything, it's easy getting a ride and you meet new people
if i were you i'd also join WWOOF - free accomodation, free food for a few hours of work and it is a lot of fun
