If I bring my HP laptop from the U.S., will I have any obstacles with getting internet in NZ?
New Zealand's power supply is 230V 50Hz and the plugs are different. You'll need an adapter for the higher voltage and for the plug, or just fit a new plug. The lower frequency doesn't matter.

Part of that will depend on your ISP. Mine has a way to log in from the web to check email, not unlike a yahoo or hotmail account.
I travel a lot - this year I've been across Canada four times, to England and Ireland once, and to Iceland. In the next couple of months I have to go to Spain, France and Germany. I no longer travel with my laptop. For one thing I'm worried about it being stolen or damaged. But it's also the weight. What doesn't seem like much at home, after weeks on the road becomes a huge burden.
The other issue with travelling with your laptop is the power supply. Have you got plugs that will work in New Zealand? What is the power supply like?
I find it much easier on the road to simply go to an internet cafe and check my emails that way. You can find internet cafes virtually anywhere in the world. They're cheap and you don't have to worry about your laptop.
Just remember to download all the information, addresses and links you'll want and need on the road.
