Cool question!
I have lived in many countries, long enough in some to call them home countries, and would say this:
Being from Paraguay originally myself, I'd say NZ is a huge overall improvement. No venomous snakes, a social system, universal healthcare, a proper legal system, and beaches all around it. On the downside, I think the Kiwis are a very nervous bunch compared to the Paraguayans, but I guess everybody else on the planet would be, too. Nowhere is more mellow than Paraguay.
Compared to Germany, where I spent 13 years, NZ is definitely less formal, and warmer. Otherwise, the two countries are surprisingly similar.
Compared to France (2 years), NZ is even more similar.
Compared to Canada (4 years), NZ is much milder, but has striking similarities with the Canadian province of British Columbia otherwise. Again, similarities abound between the two countries.
Compared to the US (2 years), NZ is mercifully liberal and enlightened. I was very nervous while in the US, you never know if you're being a victim or a perpetrator wherever you go and whatever you do. Strangely though, NZ and the American westcoast are very similar, especially Oregon.
Compared to the UK (3 years), NZ is very clean and harmless. It does not have the threatening, grimy side of the UK, but there are parts of the UK that are very much like NZ, e.g. Wales.
And compared to India (1 year), hm... it's an entirely different world. |
