Rubix Cube

In 50 years time what do you think New Zealand's national identity will be?

Gone are the days when everyone you saw was a white caucasion or a Maori. The images of kiwis being farmers is gone. We are a multicultural modern nation now. Lots of people are leaving NZ for Australia and lots of immigrants are coming into nz and the Maori population is increasing also.

What do you think the 'typical' kiwi will be like in let's say 50-60 years time?

It's great to see how much NZ has changed, I mean the country is so young so the identity is still building.

What do you think?

Thanks in advance :)

Read "Black Rainbow" by Albert Wendt. It has a pretty good vision of how New Zealand identity will turn out. He basically says we'll become an amalgam of the inputs, and the creation myths of our nations will become blurred together in popular culture. There'll be a denial of racial or ethnic differences and we'll all be bland.

I'm not sure I agree with him as it was written before the current influx of Asians, and with the Europeans and 19th century Chinese only just starting to nativise themselves and many resisting it, its probably going to be at least 2 centuries before the new Asian arrivals meld in.

One day we will all be Maoris and none of us will look the same as our ancestors cause we'll be all mixed up. A new race.

Same as it is now. NZers don't like change. Is that uncle Helen Clarke thumbing down everyone?

"It will look like the movie WATERWORLD because with global warming, most of NZ will be under water in 50 years"

- Really? are you quite sure about that, it only happens to be an extremly mountainous country with hardly any land at sea level at all and mostly higher than 100 to 200 meters.
Honestly, I don't think there's much chance of much of new zealand disappering, only the canterbury plains will be greatly affected.

50 years from now well somebody will be wiping my **** and mashing my food and feeding it to me and Il pretend Im English and ***** and whinge an moan about everything from the weather to the crap tea and how it wasn't like that back in my day. jk

Sorry mate I don't no Im not a fortune teller

Dangerous
Multicultural my ****.

NZ will just remain bi-cultural. Unless the orientals don't assimilate into the British culture in which case it will be tri-cultural. NZ's become less diverse and interesting in the last 20 years IMO. Not much has changed really, we're still finding our own identity but it will still be Anglo-Saxon at its core like most of the USA.

Nah, nothing will change they'll just assimilate or eff-off to Australia.

lol marino i was just thinking that!!!

I think it would be pretty much like america.

And we'd be talking like australians, Or maybe australians will be talking like us!

It would be great if the influx of immigrants could actually turn NZ into a republic and get rid of the treaty of waitangi and all the institutionalized racism it has created. Since there are no living real Maoris left in NZ.

It will look like the movie WATERWORLD because with global warming, most of NZ will be under water in 50 years
