Interesting sights Auckland, Wellington? |
I'm heading to NZ next week for a couple of months. What are some really interesting things to do in Auckland and Wellington? Are there good art galleries? Additional Details Thanks everyone for information so far. Should have added 1) I have quite serious mobility problems, so hiking, beaches etc are not really possible 2) I dont have choice over which towns to visit as this is not a holiday, it is work related. |

I'd agree with everything that has been said so far, particularly in regard to Te Papa. But, check out the NZ Live website to see what is on while you are here.
Some things you might want to check out in the Wellington area are:
Te Whanganui a Tara - Museum of Wellington - early Maori and European settlement in Wellington http://www.nzlive.com/en/museum-of-wellington/te-whanganui-a-tara-museum-of-wellington plus lots of other things on at the Museum
Wellington Writers Work http://www.nzlive.com/en/nzliveco/wellington-writers-walk
Wellington Cable Car Museum http://www.nzlive.com/en/nzlivecom/wellington-cable-car-museum
Salsa - http://www.nzlive.com/en/nzlivecom/new-zealand-salsa-showcase-and-salsa-party
Toi Poneke Gallery, Wellington Arts Centre http://www.nzlive.com/en/index?type=event&venue_name=Toi+Poneke+Gallery%2C+Wellington+Arts+Centre
Pataka Museum of Arts and Cultures (Porirua) http://www.nzlive.com/en/pataka-museum-of-arts-and-cultures/pataka-museum-of-arts-and-cultures
In Auckland:

Hi There
As you are coming to NZ, I assume you love natural attractions. It will depend on how much time do you have. You could see the city in 2 days, or fall in love and decide to stay here, like me.
Long story short, if you have 2 days hop on in explorer bus and see some common tourist attractions like sky tower, kelly tartons, museum, viaduct harbour, queen st etc. If you have more time, I think camping cane be no more fun in anywhere else. Abundance of beautiful beaches, bushwalks, camping sites and plenty of campervans in all around AKL and WTON. It will be quiet and the natural activity will be breathtaking. If I am gonna list here the places I like, it will be endless. Better contact i centres or the city council websites.
Enjoy your stay in NZ. And if you have time, please visit south island as well. It always takes my breath away. |

I've visited Auckland twice and I think the best way to get to see all the best attractions is if you hop on the Explorer bus as a starting point. I think that's what it's called. It goes to all the best locations. Definitely head to the Sky Tower.
In Wellington there is the Monet Impressionists exhibition on at the National Museum of NZ - Te Papa til mid May.
Here is an article which hits a few of the best places in 48 hours but of course you'll have longer to explore everything.

The wildlife sanctuary in Karori is nice too but definitely head to the Cable Car lookout point. |

You could go anywhere in Auckland there is so much to choose from and Wellington is probably the same but you should definitely go to Te Papa in Wellington.
Its a huge museum but it has interactive stuff, an amazing art gallery too. I think there is cafes but I havn't been there for awhile.
Also they change there exhibits frequently. Mobility wouldn't be a problem as they have elevators/ escalators. I hope you have a nice time over here! :) |

Both cities are pretty dull for visitors.
The Auckland ignoramii will mouth off about this Sky tower, but really it's nothing. It's no more special than any of the towers in the 20 or so cities it copied.
Auckland does have some reat beaches though if you're there in summer.
Wellingoton's no better for visitors. Outsiders might recommend 'Te Papa', but most locals will concede that it's actually pretty embarrassing (it was forced upon Wellington by the government). If it's summer yo could head to a beach around the bays. Otherwise there's a ice panorama from Mount Victoria, a nice setting on the Massey Memorial or a ride to the top of Kelburn via the cable car funicular and a nice walk back down via the botanical gardens.
Wellington does have an art gallery but it sadly doesn't get many good exhibitions.
You don't come to NZ to see the cities. You come for the countryside. |
