Is Christchurch the most unfriendliest city to work in Nz ? Why are the IT companies so rude there ?

I am an migrant, I just feel kind of uncomfortable with the attitudes of most IT companies and co workers in that area in Christchurch, often without any personality, snapping, sarcastic and cold personalities. I didn't encounter this much of cold attitude towards me in Wellington or Auckland, just wanted to know is Christchurch the most unfriendliest city in New Zealand to work in the IT industry ?

Go to Nelson instead - much nicer and warmer .... better IT people there. I used to live there and found them all great.

I live in chch for a year in the 90's, couldn't handle it anymore than that, people wern't as nice as Nelson.

I quite enjoyed Christchurch on a holiday, I don't really recall anyone being rude to me there, or anyone telling me they have been rude to while applying for jobs in IT (and I am a migrant as well). A few of my friends work in IT who were initially drawn to Christchurch have found better opportunities in Wellington or Auckland though.

I find Christchurch to be one of the least 'tolerant' of all the cities in New Zealand. There's a definite feeling of superiority, especially towards foreigners or those from Auckland.

I found people to be very friendly in Christchurch, I am from Auckland and some of the nicest people i know are from Christchurch. People in IT are quiet often bored with there jobs give the city a second chance.

I've lived in Christchurch for 7 years. Still no friends. People think they're superior to the rest of NZ. I'm only here to keep the family together. Sorry I can't answer your question, but, the city has a facade to tourists.

Worse still, the Council still keeps wood fires going! Guess it's a throw-back to the Dickensian stock they've all come from!

Christchurch is a lovely city and it is a shame you have encountered such rudeness. We are a people who speak our minds, which leads to abruptness at times, which you may perceive as rudeness.

The answer is historical.
Christchurch was settled by English "Gentry" who moved to their new land to start a new life away from the strict class cultures of England.
Then they found that they had no idea of how to live without their butlers, maids, stable hands, chauffuers, trades people and the like, so they had to re-establish their class system.
Consequently, there are cliques. Either you are in or you are out. And you can only be in if you went to the right school/university, if you had the correct elocution lessons, if you join the right pony club or hunt club, if you by your clothes exclusively at Ballentynes and so on.
The proles are only to be tolerated, after all, we must have someone to operate the checkouts, clean our windows and empty our rubbish bins.
This system does not operate in any other NZ city - only in Christchurch.
