Brendan

Is New Zealand a "Rough" country.?

I may have to move to New Zealand now because of the recession and tough economic times in Ireland at this period in time. I would just like to know if it is a rough country and if it has high crime rates. Is it as bad as Ireland, because in my opinion Ireland is a very rough country. So i just want other peoples opinions on New Zealand. Thanks

You will also probably find regional variations in crime rates - even when comparing small rural towns (ie. Turangi vs Balclutha).

I would suggest that the south half of the South Island is blissful.

I disagree with every one else.

New Zealand has a VERY low crime rate.

BUT... IMO it is nonetheless quite a rough country. You're not as likely to get burgled or mugged and there's less of a presence of drugs and homeless and streetkids.
But you can get into a fight pretty easily, especially in more working-class areas, much easier than Australia or the UK. The high amount of grafitti and vandalism tell the story. People take a swing at each other over nothing.

It doesn't have that bad a crime rate outside of South Auckland but it IS rough and there's places where you should keep to yourself and avoid people looking for trouble.

CRIME: no.
ROUGH: yes.

new Zealand in general is a awsome place but auckland is horrible and its way over crowded

Driver T
"Rough" is our way of life outside the metropolitan areas.
This has nothing to do with crime.
We are by no means the roughest country in the world.
While the media picks up on every little criminal offence and makes a major story of it, NZ is also very low as far as crime goes when compared to all other countries except for Finland.

For the most part its good....there are some rough areas and there are some rough people.....but thats the case everywhere, but crime is not rampent.

I would like to know in what way do you mean is Ireland rough... in that there are some rowdy people who drink? As there are those here too!
Some areas have higher crime rates than others, the smaller towns tend to have less crime than larger towns and cities, but crime ( apart from burgularys) is lower than in most countries.

New Zealand is great. I live there.
If you want to live i New Zealand just don't live in South Auckland. That's the most dodgiest place in New Zealand. But seem people might be keen in nicking fruit of your fruit tree's if you have any. That's as bad as it can get anywhere else than South Auckland. :)

Read the NZ Herald online - they think so

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10564669

Basically there are two gangs that run the country - the Black Power and Mongrel Mob. Policing under the previous left wing government has seen these gangs flourish.

palmeradelmar
i don't think so.

The recession is still hitting NZ and I reckon we will take longer to climb back out of it. NZ its allot like Ireland we have our boggars, knackers and scangers as well just we don't call them that here, as a country we are rough but only rough around the edges.

Nope New Zealand definately isn't a rough country. Generally people are friendly to others, with relatively low crime rates
