Is Rotorua a good place to go for those who have limited mobility?

My family and I are taking a trip to New Zealand this April. We would like to see as much of the country as possible. One of the locations we are looking at is Rotorua. It looks from my readings however that many of the sights there are geysers and other places with geological activity. As such, I am worried that the trip might require a lot of walking or we will be going to places where it will be difficult for her to walk. Would anyone know if we should just pass on Rotorua or if ever, just take a daytrip there from Auckland?

Rotorua is pretty good in regards to accessibility. Most places in New Zealand by law have to have easy access for those with limited mobility, such as ramps for wheelchair users etc. In Rotorua specifically, there are areas which are good, and some, not so much. Somewhere like Orakei Korako is an extremely popular area, but there are a lot of stairs and steep gradients. There are more "tourist friendly" places closer into the city. The walks around them aren't too long, and they are usually all raised with boardwalks for safety and accessibility.

If I were you, I would take an overnight trip to Rotorua, maybe two nights. If you go to the Information Centre in Fenton St, they can give you information on tourist attractions that are "user-friendly".

pffffffff
I went to New Zealand in Jan/Febr this year. Also to Rotorua. You should really go to te puia. http://www.nzmaori.co.nz/
A part of the park has roads were it is no problem to ride with a wheel chair, so if you have trouble walking it shouldn't be a problem. It's amazing to see the geysers, don't miss it !!!!!!!

In addition to the other info already posted, have a look on the CCS disability page for parking permit/s so you can use the disabled park spaces outside shops, etc. Without it, you will be towed away.
