Well, in Christchurch "football" means Rugby, and yes they play Rugby. I've never encountered soccer there. Everyone I know there gathers around the television to watch the All Blacks, their team and they are really passionate about it. When I stupidly said that I thought what we played here in the States is "football" they corrected me and told me that we play "gridiron." Different strokes for different folks.
