Is anyone actually planning to stay in new zealand?

Or are we all just going to movie to 'aussie' like the rest of them. I plan to one day go to Australia but that's because I'm Australian. Do any New Zealanders actually plan to stay? What is it. Our crappy weather? Personally I find it really funny. You'd think nz was a war zone at the amount of peeps who are leaving. 40 000 a year isnt it? 100 a day isnt it now? Its a little crazy.

An american view:

I lived between OZ and NZ last year and it just seems to be mostly because of the mining boom in WA. people are realizing they can make heaps of money out there. It's not just people from across teh tasman but irish, german, american....everybody want to get in on it.

but I guess also maybe NZ can seem a little small if you've lived there your entire life. not bashing it, I would love to move live in wellington for a few years in the future. but if you've spent 20-25 years in NZ chances are you've seen most of what it has to offer.

Most of the migration to Australia is purely economic. Many people are a bit 'ooh wow' about Sydney or Brisbane at first but it almost always never lasts and they eventually return home. Melbourne and Perth are a bit different though and many people stay.

If NZ gets its economy sorted out or Australia gets some hard times the migration will stop and possibly revers.

It seems to me that many Kiwis spend their youth abroad and come home when it is time to have kids. NZ is a great place to raise a family.

I was born in New Zealand and moved to Australia 3 months ago. It is not because I wanted to though, I was forced to because of my family. My parents mainly did it for the lifestyle because where I was in New Zealand was beginning to have a lot more crime taking place, but also money was a major factor. I prefer New Zealand, the culture is a lot stronger and its not so crowded, plus everyone has the same accent as me which makes it a lot easier. Maybe a lot of New Zealanders will begin moving back someday soon which is what I want to do.

I think people go to Aust for the higher wages. But, higher wages mean higher taxes. Some will go for the weather. I'm staying in NZ. Aust is great, but I'd rather visit than live there.

I plan on finishing my degree in 2011, then working for a couple of years and paying off most of my student loan. After that hopefully the economy will be looking a little better and I will look at moving overseas.

It's not because the conditions here are bad (I don't think they are), but because I want to gain the experience in my career that I can't get here.

I'm not going to stay, but I'm not moving to Australia! Too similar. I'm hoping to move to the U.S.

Partly the lifestyle here, [small part] the weather, mainly the lack of THINGS. It's ok... I just want to live somewhere with more going on.

It's garbage for people to say they are moving to Austalia for economic reasons. If you look on seek.com.au & compare it to seek.co.nz you'll find the salaries very similar. They are only higher in Australia if you work in medicine, engineering or mining. Labouring jobs pay more in Australia but so they should considering the appalling heat you would be working outdoors in! As for other economic things, the cost of living is much higher in Oz, especially housing. I've just been there for 3 months on holiday & there's no way I'd move there, it's no easier to get a job there either.

Alot of NZers go there, but remember alot of them also come back. Like me, I lived there for 3 years but didn't ever intend staying there permanently as it's just not my culture & it's too hot & too many bugs & it's a much more racist country. I prefer it here & I just holiday in Australia sometimes. Also a lot of Australians are moving here now, for one thing they can often be mortgage free by doing so, due to the higher housing prices in Australia & due to them making 20% on the exchange rate when they bring their $$ over.

im staying! i love new zealand

yeah, i agree...

There appears to be a strange dynamic of immigration and emigration connecting the English-speaking countries of the world, in my opinion.

The flow appears to be "go to the UK and eventually make your way to NZ, Oz, or Canada"; if Canada is where you went, the US will be where you'll end up. If it's NZ where you went, it'll be Oz you'll end up in.

Maybe it has something to do with an elusive equivalent to gravity, big bodies attracting small bodies, that kind of thing.

Myself, I moved from Canada to the US, then to the UK (a strange move, not often found, and caused by a fundamental change in attitude towards life in my case), and then found myself in the typical "Go Antipodes Flow" of the UK, finding myself here in New Zealand after a while.

And would you know it, I am actually toying with the thought of eventually drifting off to Australia. Not because I think it's better or anything, but just because it feels natural to do so. It's like a current you can't escape. It just goes there all by itself, and it's impossible to resist it.

Maybe I will be able to resist the urge though after all, because personally, I think New Zealand is an absolute gem. The kind of place I'd long for if I ever did up sticks and move on. I mean look at it: Lush, green scenery with water and mountains and pretty towns everywhere, a laid-back, "utopian Wales" of the 1960s if you will, an enchanted place of short driving distances, affordable living, and Victorian tea rooms and parks everywhere. I understand Australia offers some of these, too, but not everywhere, and not typically either. When you do the math, staying in NZ would really be a pretty clever thing to do. And no beasties to bite you venomously when you do the gardening.
