You have to be given any sort of Maori Greenstone Pendant or artefact. Any genuine one that is. You can't buy one for yourself. And technically you have to give it back to the person who gave it to you if they ask for it. No Maori gift is designed to be permanent.

atlantisflicka
Yes you are supposed to be given the greenstone artefacts. To buy one for yourself is considered bad luck.

jstcruizin
yes with all Manias and Greenstone they must be given. If it falls off your neck, its not meant to be...if you find one you must never put it on yourself but throw it into the sea, putting it on is bad luck.

eaglekiwi_13
Yes its one of the lovely Maori traditional stories . Most gemstones have them .

New Zealand Pounamu ( Greenstone) is only found in New Zealand waters ,but their is Jade ( Greenstone) different types found in Asia and Australia too, possibly other places.

I remember telling a Maori lady that I had given Greenstone to my American b/f when I flew to the USA for a Xmas present and she said
Ohhhhh he will come to you then......of course we had dreams , but imagine my surprise when he did fly all the way to NZ 12mths later , still wearing that Greenstone ( he had come home)....

We got married and now Im living in the USA.....and he still wears the Greenstone.....

I had never heard that story til until then , so if anyone gives you greenstone ,treasure it ......it is special !!!

In what circumstance? The double twist is more of a symbol of love than anything. The carving that I saw that was ubiquitous was the Hei Matau hook.

There are lots of curious myths around Maori folklore, but if you want to avoid the controversy and have your own piece of Jade or Greenstone you can buy it in most duty free shops [ over priced rock in my opinion ] or get it from Australia there is plenty of it there, it is the same stuff without the myths that go with it.

Hi Lauren,
What do you mean - a Maori Greenstone?
Are you referring to anything of greenstone, or a particular form of jade carving?
