Is nz a good place for kids? |
I am moving to nz (taranaki) from brisbane. i have been offered a job there but i am somewhat put off after reading the horror crime stories that happen over there. in one day in nz a family are robbed at gun point in their home, a women is held at gun point at a starwberry store on the side of the road, shots fired in tokoroa, a police officer chased with a chainsaw by some nutter! the place seems dangerous and violent. is it? |

New Zealand's population is estimated at 4,173,460 people as at July, 2008. The crime rate per capita places New Zealand at 52nd highest in the world. That is NOT good. Although a great fuss is made about every crime committed there, the government needs to toughen up on criminals and introduce harsher sentences. The majority of people in New Zealand are really quite shocked and worried at the ever increasing crimes involving babies and young kids, it's becoming a serious matter. Provided you know where and with whom your kids are with at all times, nowhere in this world, is totally safe. As for the stories that you've read, let's just say that being a police officer in NZ is ''an experience of sorts'', but they still manage to do a great job. |

Hi there,
I also would like to relocate to New Plymouth NZ, I have been ofered a job there and have a friend who now lives there,I also have two girls and I am concerned if it would be the right decision.
I live in Australia all my life, I live on the Sunshine Coast QLD. I do not like Australia and I have never seemed to fit in here. I have worked hard all my adult life and gotten no where, the family court system here is appauling and and many women and children suffer because of this corrupt system here in OZ.
I find most Australian people hard to get along with and it is very hard to make riendships, good loyal friends. I am Australian and I know it sounds weird .But OZ is not a wonderful place. I am 35 and I still can't find myself here I don't wish my children to be brought up here anymore. I also thought of moving to the USA . That is where my mother is she is American a moved back home there in 1996 and refuses to return to OZ. Because of similar reasons. I feel so alone here and I feel trapped by the family laws here. Will i be stuck here for the rest of my life...I hope we can move. Australia is a very difficult place to live and develope a good social network. Oh and the men in OZ are terrible.beware.hope NZ has more to offer.has to, any Ideas.... |

As far as crime goes, don't forget we have a very small population compared to other countries. Therefore any and every event is picked up by the press (and radio and TV) to fill its front page with. (In the overseas press only the most bizarre or horrific crimes make the front pages.)
To overseas people this makes us look bad, but in fact, in the main we are better than nearly all other countries with LESS crime per 100 000 inhabitants than they have.
As a place to bring up kids, yeah great, probably the best place in the world, especially in Taranaki. |

In general NZ is a pretty safe place to raise a family but like everywhere else there are criminal elements. |

Wikitravel.org says its crime rate is around similar levels to other countries. |

Ok, the simplest answer
A.NZ is horrified by the smallest crimes so EVERYTHING like someone being held at gunpoint is huge news there, whereas hundreds of instances happen like that in Australia every day and go unreported.
B. There couldn't be a safer place than NZ to bring up kids, I lived there as a kid and I have visited there evry year since i moved away and I have never come across any instance of extreme violence like you have read about |

na, NZ's a choice place to live.
I mean there are dangerous neighbourhoods just like anywhere else.
But I reckon just out of town; about 5 mins (car) from the city's good.
It's a really good place for your kids to grow up as well ae.
its like a less sophisticated, easy going Brisbane. |

Bad people are everywhere. It is whether you want to associate with them or sometimes you are just in the wrong place at the wrong time, like anywhere in the world. New Zealand has its good and bad points. Don't bother moving for the money, move for the lifestyle. Where in the world can you go surfing and skiing in the same day? |

we are about the same as australia,
less people though,
and you must have picked a bad day to read the news lol,
in brisbane there are many more crimes per day, they are just not put all across the front of papers and on the national news,
your children will be fine,
trust me |

Yes it is great for kids. & That is crazy! don't hear that everyday lol. THat kinda thing doesn';t happen everyday though, and coz NZ is so small, basically all of that stuff makes headlines unlike in aus its always happening and doesn't make headlines coz there would be so much of it. Don't be afraid from coming here, just stay away from poor areas to be on the safe side :] i live here and i see New Zealand as peaceful! i have never seen it to be dangerous and violent, i feel very safe here. i live in Wellington locally i haven't had any issues with violence, the only time is once a teenager was getting beat up, but a teacher from my school saw it and got envolved in the beating and stopped the kid from getting bad injuries - there may be some violence here and there.. but we got it just like every country has it, but as you can see we also have very nice people here!! Though I believe Brisbane is no better, i have someone very close to me over there, his mum had a knife pulled out on her in her workplace, nothing was done about it and they moved on! when i thought that was quiet serious, It just sounds like a everyday thing:S!
Anyway don't you worry your kids will be perectly safe :] if you felt safe in Brisbane then you'll certianly feel safe here! |

it's not far to go and check out the area first. Visit a school or two. I took my family to NZ several years ago now and the boys where fine in fact it was a very good place for them especially if they are sporty and Adventurous . With my daughter i needed eyes in the back of my head . The nice girls had their groups andshe couldn't get in with them so ended up being friends with some rough girls I eventually had to change her school to a girls school she came through it all good but really I needed to watch her carefully as well as give her a certain amount of freedom. You will find the majority of New Zealanders very friendly genuine people but like everywhere these days one doesn't put themselves in Vunerable conditions and one locks their home up rather securely. I live on The gold coast now and I read plenty of stories about crime here but never see it so hopefully that will be the case for you. |
