I think you may have been misled by the Australian media who like to make out that NZ is some kind of backward country full of Maori savages or something. There are lots of quaint innocent little towns in NZ, like Akaroa, Oamaru, Cambridge & hundreds of others that have no gangs & pretty much no crime whatsoever, not even a shoplifter. Gangs are a minority and you have them just the same in Australia. It's kind of like us NZers saying "do you have any beaches without racial wars occuring on them" just because it was on the news that there were fights at Bondi, etc a year or so ago.

The North Island is really bad, especially Auckland and the Waikato, but there's plenty wrong with those places besides gangs anyway. The further south you go, the less the problem, especially smaller towns. In Invercargill there are one or two gang houses, but out here in the country (western Southland), they're not a problem.

Blenheim used to have a gang-house, although they were pretty quiet. Then the was a bit of an altercation between the residents there and some other locals and a week or two later the gang-house was burnt down. There are a few rough locals, but generally the town is quite peaceful.

I'm sure there are many. Gangs in some cities like Dunedin aren't even worth mentioning. They're just bored kids who get off on inflicting damage to others. In Auckland and Wellington and other North Island cities, gangs are a lot bigger and they do more damage.

Most towns do not have gangs,- they appear to be a product og the bigger cities.

While most ( decent sized) places may have some form of gang, in the day to day world you never bump into them!

The only time I really had any interaction was when I was living in Pukekohe ( south Auckland)and worked at a petrol station and they came in quite a bit ( with an interesting collection of cars, keys/screw drivers and wires to start the cars)..........Most of the so called gang violence is actually against other gang members.
