There has been talk about it the last few years, that i know of. But i cant see it happening soon, maybe 10 years from now.
Personally im all for it, what does that old hag of a queen do for us?
I remember seeing on the news last year, the country was roughly split 50/50 on this. |

There are some people that promote the idea, but very few. It would be more complex in New Zealand because of the Treaty of Waitangi (essentially NZ's founding document). This is an agreement between the Crown & Maori. If the British Crown no longer had sovereignty over New Zealand there'd probably be a strong argument that this agreement would have to be re-negotiated. I can imagine years of problems if this had to occur.
Perhaps, somewhere down the track this might happen but definitely not until all Maori grievances have been dealt with, then it might be possible to write a new constitution. Don't hold your breath though. |

To get rid of the Queen, we would need to first agree on a new power sharing agreement between Maori and Pakeha within our new government structure. Neither of the two groups of people are looking forward to that debate. |

As far as I know, there was but one person actively working on pushing republican ideas.
She lost the election so she and the idea is now below the horizon. |

There is a movement, but it's generally just a handful of wankers in their little clique. Even the Maori sovereignty movement has more followers. Most of them are also members of the organisation to adopt this cheesy silver fern design for our national flag.
Perhaps it's inevitable that one day NZ will replace having the British regent at the head of constitutional monarchy and probably become a republic. But it won't be for at least 30 years in my opinion. Although the status quo seems a bit absurd at first the fact is we really aren't ready for it and we'd lose far more than we'd gain. The NZ economy isn't very strong and we can't afford both a comfortable lifestyle and a proper military. We don't have a written constitution and we've suspended the upper house or parliament for over 50 years, which would be an important feature in any feasible republic.
South Africa and Zimbabwe became republics and they've only gone downhill. If Canada of Australia want to become republics then it's up to them and their business. But I think I echo the sentiments of most kiwis when I say it's a path for New Zealand to tread with caution. |

Well Im not anti british but I am anti monarchy, I have a strong dislike for the history. But to answer your question nothing that Im aware off regarding NZ becoming a republic I don't think it would be in NZs interest to do that right now, as for Australia good for them at least then people might be able to tell the flags apart. |
