I lived in Palmerston North for a couple of years so I can tell you alot about it.

It's quite a small city (80 000 people) but has a lot to offer in terms of education. It is student city!

Massey university is located in Palmerston and is one of the topin the whole country!

http://www.massey.ac.nz/massey/campus/palmerston-north/services-for-students/adapting-to-university-life/palmerston-north_home.cfm

In regaurds to your kids, they will be fine! For your 13 year old there is Palmerston North boys high (theres one for girls too) and these are exellent schools. Freiburg is the local state school which is quite good I hear.

There are good and rough suburbs in Palmy just like any other place.

The best suburbs are: Hokawhitu, Summer hill (lots of new nice houses which over look Palmy as they are on a hill), Aokautere, Riverdale (runs parellal to the Manawatu river), West End is alright, Terrace End and Rosyln.

The worst suburbs are Kelvin Grove, Takaro and worst of all Highbury. Highbury is invested with gangs however when I go back to Palmy we always drive through it and never see or get any trouble. The gang tension in the area has settled down lots in the last 6 years so it's quite alright to drive or walk through (walk during the day that is!).

Hokawhitu is the best area in my opinion, as it has some lovely houses and streets (go to Manapouri Street! It's tree lined in summer). The local Hokawhitu primary school is exellent (so my cousins tell me).

Hokawhitu is also good as it has a lagoon down near the river which you can go paddling on, it has Massey Uni teachers college in it and it has some exellent houses.

In regaurds to safety, Palmerston North is a student town so you can expect a bit of trouble and read about it in the papers. I'll be frank with you. Palmerston is very safe during the day but try not to walk by yourself into the city at night if you are a women. My Aunty has done it heaps of times but there have been are few attacks recently.

Another bad thing is that the town has large amounts of boy racers (or car hoons) which tear around the place constantly (mainly of Friday nights). The police are constantly chasing after them.

So yes, Palmerston is fairly safe but don't go out alone at night and keep an eye on those car hoons! lol. If your into watching the boy racers being chased by police, then you'll have a good laugh lol. I DID!

Well yeah. That's pretty much Palmerston North for ya!

Hope you enjoy my home town and good luck with moving!

Thanks for the question :)

NZ is safe, Palmerston north is a great place, it has one of the countries universities. Ireland & nz are very similar but nz would be a bit drier. I dont think you'll have any problems settling in. Its a great place see you when you get here

Relax, you are heading to godzown country.
Linton Camp School located 10kms from Palmerston Nth. caters for children whose parent/s work in the army. The school has seven classes from Year 0-Year 8. Linton Camp also has early childhood facilities such as Te Kohangareo,(Maori studies) , Childcare Centre and Kindergarten. Linton School is a Military Base school and therefore meets concerns unique to this environment.

Palmerston North is poo. There is nothing to do there. Move to Auckland!

Oh, it's safe, all right. It's so safe that you might get bored to deth, but it's safe. and the education system is good. This will be heaven for you, and hell for your kids.
