Traditionally they were made of whale bone or moa bone. Most these days are made of cow bone though because whales are considered endangered etc...etc.. There are people in the country however, (a very small amount) that have licences to dive for whale bone to make their carvings from. One guy is from the South Island and made my partners family's bone carvings from whale. |

Ideally whale bones.
Some people have gotten permission to harvest bones from deceased whales (that have been stranded) from the Department of Conservation. They dispose of the whales; bury them. They can get a special certificate for cultural purposes to harvest these bones.
Generally they use cow bones. |
