Mobilehome or small car + homestays? |
Hi - we're heading for the first time to NZ, but are unsure if we should rent a small car and stay in farmstays and bed&breakfasts, or if it's a must to have your own campervan/mobilehome.
A mobilehome is around NZ$ 160 a day, a small car is around NZ$ 50.
Is there accomodation available for around NZ$ 80 a night for 3 persons?
And an average restaurant meal, how much does it cost?
Sorry if my questions sound naive, your help is greatly appreciated. Additional Details Travel time is April 2009, Southern Island. |

it woud be cheaper to have a mobile home but you cant just stop on the side of the road and sleep you need to use camping grounds, these are fairly cheap and have sites with electricity and shower blocks etc. Youll be hard pressed to find motel or B&B accomodation for 3 people under 80. |

Try http://www.jasons.com this website could help
Average restaurant meals... It depends where you go...Ask at the local information centres in each town for their recommendations, if you get a self contained unit you can go to the local supermarket and make your own meals also you can make your lunches for the next day to keep costs down
You haven't said when you are travelling to NZ if it is soon our weather has been very unpredictable so check it out before you come
Hope you enjoy all NZ has to offer...... |

I think it's better to travel by car not campervan/mobilehome because i've traveled by campervan and you'll need more patrol and there's only 3 of you travelling so accommodation will not cost too much. this are the accommodation sites where you can get accommodation for 3 people in April 2009, Southern Island for less then NZ$70 per day.
www.hostelworld.com and www.revingtons.co.nz with your own bathroom (ensuit) and private room.
Average restaurant meal is about NZ$30 pp
I hope these info helps you |

Hi
It is not a must to have a campervan, although it does perhaps give you a little more freedom. Have a look at http://www.holidays-in-newzealand.com. Check out the hostels which actually covers all cheaper accommodation. You can get accommodation for about $80 a night for 3 people in cheaper motels, cabins, backpackers - which can have self contained room etc.So it is certainly possible to travel for that.
Restaurants - you can check the restaurant reviews on the New Zealand restaurants pages. You can get everything from cheap takeaways, ethnic meals are often very cheap - Indian curry for $10 a meal But the supermarket is also a good place to get takeaway salads etc. If you are not staying in motels, you may like to bring or invest in a cheap plate, and save the cutlery off the plane .Idfit is Air NZ theirs is good strong plastic. I always take a bowl and spoon, so can have fresh fruit, yoghurt and cereal for breakfast.
Just check that the vehicles you are comparing have all the costs included. You can look at the Motorhome hire on that site suggested as it has all the different companies. Occasionally campervan companies have special deals. It depends when you are coming. |
