Moving to Auckland from the gold coast... YUCK? |
im 16, live on the gold coast and have the best life ever here. i go to a GREAT school and have GREAT friends and go to a great church. i spend my weekend surfing at the beach and hanging out at the shopping centres with mates.
there are no fights at my school and virtually no bullying. now my dad says were moving to fregen new zealand in 3 weeks because of his job! i prayed to god it wasnt in auckland and sure enough it was auckland!!!!
i hear some bad things about the place from my kiwi friends and am quite scared of going there. im imgeing this old cold raining depressing crime ridden city with gangs who shoot at you! like a cold wet L.A.
PLUS its my second last year at school this year in QLD (3rd last in nz) and i will have 3 years to get use to your schooling system!
tell me, will i be able to make friends in auckland? im probobly going to get my face smashed in my some "maoris" or islanders.
were looking at some place called mission bay or albany? either one of those too. mum said she can get me into a private school a christian one, but still
I AM SCARED!
please help me!
what do i do? Additional Details will i be able to like chill at the beach and that on weekends if it is warm? i want my lifestyle to be similar |

Mission bay is one of the best places to live in Auckland its beautiful with nice beaches and cafes and heaps of rich people, beautiful houses.
If you go there with the attitide that you will get your face smashed in by a maori or islander you proabley will.
There is nothing wrong with maoris or islanders, You seem to have quite a snobbish, clueless attitued, I suggest you get rid of it before you move here. Otherwise it may be difficult to make friends. No one will want to be mates with the ***** snob racist aussie girl. ( sorry that sounds really mean)
Auckland is a great place to live, at the moment its nice and hot. |

You have a rather different impression to the reality. Mission Bay is beautiful right by the beaches and not a gang in sight. Albany is not quite by the beach - only a few minutes by car although there are a lot of lovely homes all along the many beautiful beaches on the North Shore. Albany is mostly new houses. and I can assure you all the schools on the North Shore are considered very good schools. Any problems you may encounter would be more if you had the wrong bunch of friends. If you go to a private school, again they will be very nice schools with nice people.
Just like the Gold Coast - there are certain areas where the people you describe hang out. But if you don't go there it won't affect you.The North Shore ( where Albany is) is regularly voted the best place to live in New Zealand! The Eastern Bays where Mission Bay is also a lovely area.
The last few days and for the rest of the month it is about 27-8 degrees hot, sunny and wonderful swimming etc. Albany has a huge new Westfield shopping Mall.Supposedly the biggest in Australasia.And... a big plus .....we have daylight saving so it won't be dark at 6.00 o click when you want to be out enjoying the weather!
Whether you make friends will be up to you entirely. Get involved in activities at school, your church etc. Be POSITIVE ........I am sure when you get here your fears will prove to be unfounded. Life here will not be too different to where you are now. Except we will have colder winters. and more rain. But there is a lot to do, people are friendly and the schools are good.
You are being somewhat blind to reality to say things like the shoot out don't happen in Australia. I have been around a lot longer than you and been so many times to Australia I have lost count. I also have 3 siblings who live there .I was on the Gold Coast when they had a big problem in central Gold Coast area with young people.
Now what were those riots in Sydney?WE don't have things like that here! And I have seen numerous similar things on TV. Melbourne has drive by shootings far more often than in New Zealand! What about the murders we read about in Brisbane.I think you need to be realistic and take off your rosy tinted glasses. I doubt crime in New Zealand is any worse than Australia.
In saying that..........it is never easy to make a change. You will have ups and downs until you settle down. That is normal.
So cheer up! You might actually enjoy it! |

In response to your 'additional questions/details'
Sure you'll be able to chill at the beach. Mission Bay and or Albany have great beaches to chill... and great food places too. Lots of bays though... near Albany there's more surf beaches, but Mission Bay, is that, a bay.
And wondering about the guy on P and the shooting... accidental by a cop. It doesn't happen everyday. That boy boy was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. And saying that NEVER happens in Australia is a load of bullsh**t. Australia per capita has a higher crime rate than NZ. You need to calm down and experience life here firsthand before you jump to conclusions. |

I live on the Gold Coast. Many years ago I lived in Mission beach I liked it. You will make friends eventually and new zealand has some amazing places to explore but these things take time. Settle down at your school work in a few years you will have a choice of returning to The Gold Coast. Most maoris you meet will be fun and friendly. You know the Gold Coast has a lot of crime . Do you see it. I don't . It will be the same there. It will be a little different for you and yes the rain comes often but they do have some nice days . Think positive. Stay patient and eventually you might be very happy there. |

True winters are rainy and cold but the crime factor isn't an issue. I moved here 2 years ago and its taken me this long to feel that I am really happy here. If you love beaches, then get your mom and dad to opt for Albany on the North Shore - very laid back beach culture on the Shore and you're close to the country's biggest shopping centre. For real big surf you'll need to travel half an hour to the west coast but Long Bay (about 10 mins from Albany) can be okay. There is a nice teenage culture on the Shore, they all hang out at the beach together and I've never seen any rough sorts. PS I live in Browns Bay just over the hill from Albany |

Lol, hun.. Auckland is nothing like you're imagining :]
I live here.. and have never had problems with Maoris or Islanders. They're just normal people, lol. And if you're going to Albany or Mission Bay.. you won't have any problems at all. Most of the 'rough areas' are in South Auckland.
Sure, it can get a little rainy round here.. but it's certainly not depressing. And crime ridden? I think not. And the only gangs around here and fake imitation crap and there's no chance you'll be shot at.
It's a safe city, you'll be fine :]
Best of luck. Don't stress about Auckland, lol.

Auckland is a big sprawling city and the suburb of Mission Bay is very civilised and yes you will be able to like chill out on the beach just down the road on weekends. There are surf beaches further north of Auckland and on the West Coast. There are loads of malls and good schools. Just be nice and sincere with everyone and I'm sure they will be nice to you - just dont be a whiny ozzie, ok? |

Hebron Christian College in Mt Albert, Auckland is great for a church going student. Hebron has a great College with teenage students without hangups and have a Christ centred life. If you join up some of the local Church Youth Groups, they do some pretty fun and fantastic activities. Auckland is surrounded by beaches and the weather has been just as hot as Australia over the summer. I don't think Auckland is bad as what you think if you make good friends. Also the malls in Auckland now are just as good as the Gold Coast. |
