Don't fall for Frantic's hype. My husband is a Kiwi, I moved there in '89 and just loved it. I missed my family but that was the only drawback. We live in NJ in the USA now and I would say summers in NZ were almost as hot and winters almost as cold. They had one snowstorm when I lived there, about 4-6 inches, in 1992 and it was such a big deal they made a book about it. The people I met were all super-friendly, I was hired at one store because they liked my accent, lol. I kept in touch with some friends for years after we left and I adore his family almost as much as my own. The food was not very exciting when I was there, but that may have changed by now. They have a lovely beach there, too. I hope you enjoy it, I can't wait till we can offord to go back.

Hi Francesco - I live in Christchurch and the climate is one of extremes. I have clothes I wear in winter and clothes I wear in summer and they don't mix. In Summer I wear skirt or shorts and sandals every day and in winter I wear jeans, a sweater and a thermal. Here is a link to the city council web site which has the weather everyday.

Well there probally will be quite a climate differance. In the summer tge average temprature in Chch is around 23 degrees but sometimes gets up to the late 20's / early 30's. In winter it gets rather cold with the average temprature around10 degrees but sometimes getting down to 2 or 3. Sometimes there is even snow!! The people are very friendly and the food is good too. Good luck and if you get the chance, take an hour drive south from Chch to Ashburton!!! Best place ever!!

Well in the summer it is hot so you won't need any adjusting to tht. In the winte, it is cold and wet most of the time.
Hmm i think the adults are nice and most of the teenagers are friendly (im a teen).

Hey if you happen 2 be in the city center, go and try yum cha(chinese lunch) at
China Town Seafood Restuarant, 71 Kilmore St ( close to the casino)! Yuuuum

Also you can drive up to Hanmer Springs thermal pool which is only 1hour and a half's drive.Don't listen to frantic - facts are all wrong. Wellington is windy and not warmer than ChCh and Auckland has many people and its the air is real stuffy.

I'm jealous!!! It will probably be alot cooler temperature wise, but beautiful. My niece lived in NZ for about 16 months, not there though. Here's info I found:

frantic is totaly WRONG! wellington is colder than christchurch and winder and way more misrable! auckland people seem to be depressed by the rain and it has never been 7 degrees at christmas time thats crazy shes crazy and christchurch people are generally very friendly you'll be in for a shock the climate is different and frantic obviously lived in a bad part of town e.g aranui,linwood,mareihau where gangs control the street.

People wont be as friendly as italy but at least theres no mafia! christchurch is lovely stick to the west its generaly better! i sometimes gets into the low 30's about 3-5 times a summer and the maximum tempeture ever recorded in christchurch was 41.7 degrees celcius and 107 degress farenheit

dont move to aussie people will call you wogs because you are foreign kiwi's will accept you as we accept any one that wont to come to new zealand !

Hi, Christchurch is a friendly place. Lived here my whole life and I would describe our weather as four season in one day. I seem to recall summer being nicer when I was younger.
We get very cold frosts in winter. But like most places, large buildings have air con and everyone wears polypros (warm underclothes) in winter.
Summer is nice but inconsistent and sometimes the cold winds can ruin it.
One thing is being in the southern hempishpere we experience more UV rays so even when its cooler you can get burnt by the sun more easily. So don't forget your sunblock and have a fantastic time.

I don't want to be negative but - does it have to be Christchurch? . Have you considered Australia? There are a lot of Italians in Australia and it is a lot friendlier.
Well this is my personal opinion because I lived in Christchurch for 4 years and found it very unfriendly. Maybe you will not have that experience I hope.
It is very cold in winter - frosts can stay around until mid-day.
Summer however, they have quite hot temperatures (although we did have a max of 7deg one Christmas - in the middle of summer!!)
Does it have to be Christchurch?
Auckland has a more temperate climate and more friendly people
Wellington is also warmer and the friendliest of all.
If the decision is definate - then all I can say is I wish you the best of luck and hope you like it more than I did.
It is a very pretty place.
