If you're in Nelson it would be definitely worth hiring a car and heading over to Takaka/Golden Bay which is a beautiful area. If you are just staying in Nelson you can talk a walk up to the Centre of New Zealand which has a great view over the town. Nelson also has a beautiful park which is great for a picnic or just to stop and rest if the sun gets too hot. There is also a pretty walk you can talk along the river to a few swimming holes, the walk starts just a few minutes walk from the centre of town.

Tahunanui is Nelson's beach which is nice for a swim and there's a few nice cafes and restaurants in that area. A little bit out of Nelson is a pituresque swimming hole located at Aniseed Valley, any tourist information should give you directions on how to get there but it's definitely worth it.

There's plenty of places to eat and drink in Nelson, for great drinks and delicious food, try The Oyster Bar on Hardy Street, there's also Lambrettas for pizza and Morrison Street Cafe for good cafe and lunch food.

Have Fun!
