New Zealand/Australia question?

Which are there more of?...

Maori in New Zealand
Aborigines in Australia

Just wondering cause I'm really into Maori culture and I watched Australia last night and it showed Aborigines, and the question just popped into my head.

In Australia the Australian Aboriginal/Torres Strait/ South Sea Islanders make up little more than 2.6% of the whole population, they made up 100% before colonisation with 13.5million living in the whole country. 2.6% out of 21million in australia.

However in contrast New Zealand Maori make up 15% with a population of about 5-7million.

So therefore I think maoris make up a larger population in New Zealand than it is in Australia for Aborigininis.

Hope this helps.

I think you will find there more Aborigines.

2006 census, 526,281said they were Maori. However............in a census anyone who states they have Maori blood no matter how miniscule is registered as Maori. They may have much more of other blood, but if they mention they have any Maori that is where they are listed.Which frankly rather distorts the numbers!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Aborigine Wikipedia says there are 517,000 aborigines mainly in the Northern territory. So while the figures are similar.......... due to the way NZ calculates Maori I would suggest there are more true Aborigine than Maori.

I think the correct answer is that there are more Maori's in Australia...

It's Funny Because There Is More Maori's In AUSTRALIA Than New Zealand.

But There Is More Maori's In New Zealand Than Aborigines In Australia.
The Reason For That Is Because Maori's Have One Culture And Aborigines Are Multi-Cultural.

I agree with the person above me... Though there are more maori here in Australia due to the fact that New Zealand has become a home for many Asian countries (Please dont take offence) and they are more qualified to do high paying jobs. Whereas maori and islanders alike prefer to be more hands on than anything else and Australia offers that to us.

So sorry to answer your question there are more Aboriginals then there are maori.

Totally agree with the fourth answer. There are probably more pure aborigines than there are pure maori's. I know many mainly european blood and part maori people who prefer to be full maori than just part.

Dorklander
There are more maoris in nz. There are 500 000 in New Zealand and only 200 000 aboriginals in Australia.
