New Zealand! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR?

I'm originally from NZ but now live on the Gold Coast, Australia.

I love my home country with a passion but I get extremly worried and sometimes angry and sad when I hear of the violence that goes on over there.

This morning in Auckland a man armed with a knife killed two people. Yesturday a man was discovered dead in a house fire in Epson, Auckland.

Constant stabbings happening in Christchurch, a few rapes in my home city, Palmerston North, I mean, what's going on?

It actually makes me sad! Yes I know this stuff happens in Australia, but it is a large country!

Why does this stuff happen a lot in NZ? Will it get better? Almost everybody I know in nz has been the victim of violent crime.
Additional Details
Yes crime does happen on the Gold Coast but we have had about 4 or 5 murders here this year. Auckland has had 14!

granted these figures might not include the recent happening in Auckland - and sorry when was the last stabbing in christchurch? i haven't heard of any recently...
BUT Australia is ranked higher (worse) on EVERY one of these reports regarding safety, murders, rapes and other crimes. not only that but even Switzerland (supposedly the safest country in the world) ranks higher than New Zealand

I'm angry that despite the fact many many countries (UK, America, and Australia to name but a few) still have far higher crime and murder rates than NZ yet people are becoming obsessed that we are an "unsafe" country.

I for one have certainly not been the victim of a violent crime in NZ and i've lived here 24 years in various cities. when i was in Australia (Sydney) on holiday though, we had 2 appartment rooms between family in the place we were staying, one afternoon the door to the room myself and my nan were sharing was ajar whilst we were all lingering in the other room (right next door) i popped back out to our room and found a man in there about to steal our stuff he looked up and said "oh sorry wrong room" - nothing like that has ever happened to me in NZ.
so just saying it goes both ways and crime is all relative, you can't just go labelling whole countries "unsafe" because of the actions of a few...
well thats my tuppence worth anyway
what about all the other cities in towns in NZ? Queenstown, Wanaka, Wellington, Nelson, Picton??? Kerikeri, Russell, Te Anau?? Motueka, Kaikoura, Taupo???

it's not as bad anymore like it was for the last year. it's getting better actually. the murders are usually in auckland. people just need to relax and use their minds instead of their hands. otherwise I LOVE NEW ZEALAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ^^ GAWD I LOVE IT HERE. EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE SOME FOOLISH PEOPLE IN AUCKLAND. THAT'S MY FAV PLACE BECAUSE LIKE IT'S A BIG PLACE AND LOTS OF HOT GUYS!!!!!!!!!! XD GO NZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ENJOY YOUR WINTER. XXXXXXXXX

Are you insinuating that crime of this nature does not happen on the Gold Coast?
It does you know, and maybe even to a greater extent than Auckland. What's a large country got to do with it? Statstics are based on a rape/ murder/ bashing/whatever per 100 00 of population.
These figures will be available somewhere - check them out.

I live in NZ and have never been a victim of crime. I guess it doesn't matter what the country is crimes such as you describe happen anywhere at any time.A lot is due to overdrinking, jealousy, or even just pure pig-headedness and it's almost impossible to predict crime. My advice would be just don't dwell on it and behave as best you can. Enjoy the moment and not worry too much about the future.

i don't know the statistics in new zealand for crimes of any kind ,but here in uk. it's out of control and the people who run this country won't admit it, in new zealand you are having a big cultural change, rather than the usual european immigrants from several generatrions back you are getting a totally different kind of immigrant, mostly from asia and the islands, most of these people head for the big cities where they think there are great financial oppertunities for them ,and guess what when they arrive there , there's bugger all, we have a television programme from new zealand, 10/7 it's called all about the major cities in new zealand and the suburbs close by, about the crime and violence in new zealand, from what i can see there are gangs of asians and islanders hanging round in gangs and being a pain in the ****, even a lot of the moari people have had a guts full of them, also the moari people get the blame for any one with a brown face who commits a crime, i can't believe how it's changed from the first time i went there, i had a few months holiday in new zealand last year on the north island for the first time, i got the shock of my life , comparing it to what it was like just ten years ago, hope it dont get like the uk. and lose your identity and every one else takes preferance over you

I guess people are going crazy cos of the economy or something. But I think the main thing is that these things are big here, and not so much everywhere else, so they get televised. Take that shortland street.

yeah mate i know what you mean i lived in southport on the goldie and felt safe as walking around at night i saw one fight on the gold coast the whole time i was living there at burlie heads. last week i was in wellington and got assaulted on the street randomly walking between pubs and the other night in the pub in dunedin i got whacked in the head by a drunk student. I don't get it either, what the hell are they putting in the water over here? I think the way kiwis drink plays a large roll personally.

I'm 2 hours north of Auckland, and things over the whole country are getting worse. Senseless and violent acts are happening everywhere with no end in sight. It's so terrible, so many people are getting seriously hurt and even killed.
Stay where you are, you'll probably get hurt yourself if you come back.
