My friend and I are travelling all over New Zealand and want to find cheap accomodation in hostels, but it's important to us to have twin rooms rather than dorms, and ensuite bathrooms. How easy/hard will it be to find such places for not too much money?
You will pay for extra having an ensuite....I work part time cleaning in a backpackers ( Watsons Way...near Blenheim and I highly recommend it for accommodation)...and I know they cost more for the ensuites....having said that they have 2 bathrooms not far from the rooms....and you can get a twin room which is cheaper...its not much more to walk a few metres down the hall than to your ensuite one!!
I suspect all will be the same...try www.bbh.co.nz for listings of heaps of hostels in NZ

That's what my wife and I looked for in our travels around the North Island. Very few. The only one I remember was in Tairua south of a bridge on the water side of the highway.

Mareeclara has a good answer.
Most of the Youth Hostels (YHA) in the major centres have twin rooms with ensuite.
The run-of-the-mill backpacker hostels are unlikely to have the facilities you ask for.
