Speaking French, nah, forget it.
The number of times a French voice is heard in NZ is minimal except for visitors from Tahiti and New Caledonia. NZers don't like the French and the French know it, so they stay away. (The French are the only race on earth who have carried out a Government sponsored act of war on NZ in NZ, and Kiwis will remember it!) Languages in demand in the tourism and hospitality industries are German, Thai, various Chinese dialects, Japan and Korean. Also it may be of assistance to speak (or understand) Australian.
You should have a job lined up before you enter the country. If you are a student, then SJS (Student Job Search) will help you get a job while you're in NZ.
See your nearest OFFICIAL New Zealand immigration consultant about work, but don't hand over any money to anyone who doesn't have official status. There are alot of bogus ones operating who take your money and do nothing for you. Even a NZ MP has just been sacked for doing this.
Accommodation and work will be easy to find in any center except for Auckland which is full of people like yourself and other Jafas.

There's a wide variety of rental accommodation in Auckland, that shouldn't be too hard. Jobs might not be as easy - you usually have to have one lined up before you migrate, otherwise you won't be able to stay here.
Speaking French will be an advantage in some industries, particularly tourism.

I know a bit about this, if you are moving permanently you will need to have a job before you leave the UK. The Kiwis do not take kindly to those moving there without a job, they have enough dole bludgers of their own and do not want any more. I am not saying that you are workshy, but that is the way they think. If you have any sort of marketable skills such as building trades, nursing, architects, are a doctor, a plumber or any sort of skilled person then they will want you. As for rented flats, Auckland is a bit short of them, that is not the situation in the rest of the country. I can recommend Hawkes Bay, it is the fruit bowl of the country and has superb vineyards full of world class wine and a Mediterranean climate. A lot of migrants go to Auckland and stay there, they are known as JAFA's "Just Another F*cking Aucklander" Be adventurous! Go somewhere other than Auckland, try Wellie, the capital, it has much more going for it than the City of Sails.

Rental accomodation is easy to find,some landlords now prefer you have references as some people dont properly care for the property or bail out before paying rent,but theres just as many places that dont demand such things. Work is easy to find,theres so many job vacancies advertised on a daily basis in numerous papers and on the net.

it is easy to find rental accommodation. 1 bedroom apartment (2 rooms) about 300-360 per week in the city. if u gonna live outside business district, its obviously cheaper. not sure about french as 2nd language, but its always a good thing to know other languages. finding a job shouldnt be very hard, but again depends on what is your profession or what kind of job you want to get here. waiter, shop assistant jobs are very easy to find.there is heaps of advertising about those ones. the unemployment rate is about 2-3%, its almost nothing.so,i dont think u will have a problem

Rental accomodation is easy to find. All the estate agents have lists of rental properties. They don't tend to make much effort to show you around. The lists have the addresses on them, and they tell you to take a look at the place from the outside and then get back to them if you want to look inside.
Rental terms are very reasonable. You are generally only committed for 3 weeks, as that is the notice term. The bond is held by a government body, whether you rent privately or through an agent, so there is never any problem getting it back.
If you rent through an agent, they charge you a weeks rent + GST as a service charge. You can also look in papers and rent direct from the agent so you don't pay that fee.
You could have a look at rentals on www.trademe.co.nz as lots of people list on there.

As for jobs...depends what your skills are! There are plenty of jobs in Auckland and if you are skilled you shouldn't have a problem. Look at www.monster.co.nz just about every job in the country is listed on there.
And you don't have to have a job before you get there. I arrived without a job and found a job no probs. However, you might find it hard to get a visa without a job lined up.

Being bi lingual in French probably isn't going to give you a massive advantage as most NZ companies don't deal with French companies. Japanese or Manderin would be much more useful as NZ companies tend to deal with other companies in Asia.

Auckland has by far the most going for it especially in terms of employment, unless you want to work for the government. Most companies are moving their offices out of Wellington and to Auckland. The job I got was due to the whole team in Wellington being made redundant and the jobs being moved to Auckland! The weather is better in Auckland too. It's always gale force winds in Wellington!
