New Zealand is culturally diverse. I think just about every country and ethnicity would be represented in New Zealand today, but some ethnic groups are smaller than others, and Europeans (pakeha) still dominate, followed by Maori, Pacific Islanders, and Asians.
The top 10 responses from the 2006 census in regard to ethnicity were:
New Zealand European 2,381,076
Mäori 565,329
New Zealander 429,429
Chinese 147,570
Samoan 131,103
Indian 104,583
Cook Islands Maori 58,009
Tongan 50,478
English 44,202
Korean 30,792
Note: 'New Zealander' could be any ethnicity or nationality - this is how people chose to answer the question on the census.
Main ethnicities/nationalities in New Zealand include:
Australian, British, Cambodian, Chinese, Cook Island Maori, Dutch, English, Fijian, Filipino, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Maori, Niuean, Samoan, Scottish, Sri Lankan, Tokelauan, Tongan, Tuvaluan.
Middle Eastern, Latin American and African made up only 0.9% of the population. The numbers of people in each group in the Census were: Middle Eastern 17,514: Latin American 6,657: African 10,647.
We're all immigrants or descended from immigrants - New Zealand once had no human inhabitants at all. |

Most of NZ has British ancestry and there's of course the indigenous Maoris.
Of course there's plenty of ancestry form elsewhere, but as much as the PC brigade like to lie NZ isn't really 'multicultural', but still bi-cultural as most immigants assimilate themselves into either culture. Needless to say most people who dream NZ is multi-cultural have never acually been overseas or seen a truely multi-cultural place.
Although the recently arrived Chinese community might make it 'tri-cultural'. Who knows...
EDIT: Gotta agree with Leslie NZ only fools itself into thinking it's multi-cultural. |

Pacific Islanders. If they aren't the largest minority they seem like it because they are very loud. Also lots of asians, but they tend to keep to themselves. |

Lot's of people from asia, and from pacific Islands, like samoa |

Dorrian

The ethnicity is also regional to some extent. You will find that places like Dunedin, South Otago and stretches of Southland are very largely Scottish. Dunedin is often referred to in the NZ media as a Scottish city. |

I live in Dunedin and I don't entirely agree with Dorrian. Yes, Dunedin was founded mainly by Scots, and the influence is huge - but today Dunedin is a multicultural mecca - largely in part due to its student population. Still there are lots of nationalities represented by the people in this city.
Some of the nations (in no particular order)represented at my University are: Taiwan, South Africa, Lebanon, Nepal, Senegal, Japan, Canada, America, Fiji, Ireland, China, Samoa, UK, Korea, Israel, Russia, Germany, Indonesia, Greece, Hong Kong, Mexico, Bangladesh, Puerto Rico, Chile, and Australia.
Even Southland is getting more diverse, I'm thinking of the diversity in Invercargill and Queenstown.
It's a melting pot of cultures and the great thing is that for the most part, there is a mutual respect for what individuals bring into NZ.
That's what makes NZ so great - it has succeeded where the US failed - by giving people of different cultures a warm welcome and allowing them to maintain their individuality while embracing a kiwi lifestyle.
So definitely yes, NZ is a culturally diverse country. Thanks for asking

Loads. Whites, Maori, then Pacific Islanders are third in number; then Asian, followed by just about every other culture. |

Person above me is correct, there are a lot of South Africans and Asians here, I think those two nationalities are the majority of the immigrations. Of course there are others but those are just the most noticeable.
I don't think we are THAT culturally diverse... not compared to other places like New York City or something. But we do have some. |
