New Zealand - the weather and shops? |
Hi, as my nosing into NZ continues as am thinking of moving there have two questions for those in the know.
1. Weather - am considering Northland. So could anyone tell me I have heard its "sub-tropical" but when I look at some books the stats for weather say its temperature ranges are similar to the uk. Which is not sub tropical at all! Can anyone comment on weather in Northland and any other parts of NZ that has good weather. I dont like cold!
2. In a typical town in NZ what are the standards/availability of shops/availability of goods like? Not thinking cities here, I am presuming those are like the UK? Places like Wharengei or perhaps even smaller?
thanks as usual |

Northland is a lot more "sub tropical" than the UK. It doesn't snow at all in Northland or anything like that. Like almost anywhere in the world, NZ has the occasional big storm. Northland is very warm in summer, and warm in winter in comparison to the rest of NZ. However, there is quite a bit of flooding when there are large storms, but that depends on the area you go to.
The shopping in a small NZ town is usually up to a decent standard. A larger town like Whangarei would have your normal chain stores for shopping. As for grocery shopping, most towns have at least 1 supermarket. The supermarkets have different price ranges and different quality products. For example, Pak'n'Save has a cheap range, with more low quality foods but in bulk availability. New World has high quality products and is more customer service based. Others like Foodtown and Countdown are average in these respects.
Auckland is a couple of hours drive south so any other shopping you want to do can easily be done in a weekend day trip. |

Northland has a warm summer with tempuratures upto 30 degrees during the summer, its autumn now and its still around 25 degrees on a good day. Summer in the north will bring a mix of sun and rain showers with humidity when the warm air comes down from the tropics.
Some years we will be hit my a cyclone, but not very often, by the time the storm reaches its been downgraded to a tropical depression but still packs rain and wind that can cause damage. |

Yes, weather ; we have it.
And shops; we have them too.
Northland will be quite a bit warmer than the UK. Think Spain, Portugal and you'd be nearer the mark. The occasion tropical storm sweeps through, perhaps 1 or 2 a year. These are usually the dying ends of a tropical cyclone that's moving south on its way out. Nothing too disastrous.
Most towns have a variety of shops, although some small towns may have just 1 or 2.
A place like Whangarei (a city) has everything a shopper could need.
The next biggest towns in the north are Warkworth, Wellsford, Dargaville, Kaikohe and Kaitaia. These are larger small towns, perhaps about the size of Downham Market or Rochester in the UK.
Hope this helps.
Added later: sorry, instead of Rochester, I meant Stroud (near Rochester) |

Northland has warmer weather than the UK, although it can get muggy.
Shopping is terrible and will be a big come-down from the UK. The range of shops and goods will be low and poor. It' pretty crap in Auckland and will be very limited in Whangarei (which doesn't enjoy the best reputation as a city altogether). No Tesco's, Asda, Sainsbury's, etc... that sell clothes and a wide range of different foods I'm afraid. |

Moving from New Zealand to the UK I have found I often can't buy the things that are readily available off the shelves and the staff especally in boots have a very poor medical knowledge so you would do better off
in New Zealand for shopping than the UK.
New Zealand gets cold in the winter just like England and so does Melbourne and Syndey.
If you want awesome weather all the time move to Brisbane. |
