Um I live in New Zealand so don't need to do any web research to tell you quite plain and simply we have Cars, buses, trains, planes, boats, trams, gondolas, bikes and any other form of transport that is widely used in the modern world |

Hey we get around in grass skirts and paddle around in canoes!
Ha ha
No seriously guy, NZ is a modern country, it has a few motorways/freeways in the bigger cities, its got a national railway network, 2 ferry service companies between North and South Island, national highway system (State Highway 1, 2,3 etc right up to Highway 99), buses in the cities and towns and intercity, passenger trains on a few lines, suburban rail networks, international airports, ports and ships for passengers, tourists and freight. We have a really high rate of car ownership, 4 million people, about 4 million vehicles or some ridiculous figure like that.
Our roads can be pretty tough to drive on cos they are made on the cheap and the government syphons off transport and petrol taxes into the general funds so they are not spending transport money on transport all the time and we have traffic jams and accidents and stuff but not as bad as other countries I've been in
Yeah and what she said about horses and stuff also lots of walking tracks, plus 4 wheel motorcycles kids bikes blah blah blah western country in Pacific next door to Asia. There's a HUGE number of boats |

I spent my honeymoon in New Zealand and went all over both islands in the country.
Most of the time we drove a car, and on a couple of occasions we took a train. Took a ferry from the north island to get to the south island. Buses are commonly used by the locals as gasoline is very expensive.
Auto traffic was very light in most places, except for Aukland, and that was nothing compared to traffic in a big American city. The roads were very well maintained, most were two lanes each way. The scenery is beautiful.
You might want to contact the New Zealand Tourism board or New Zealand embassy or consulate for additional information as I am only speaking from personal experience. |

We use cars like The Flinstones.
We have no subway system but we have trains in the main cities, Wellington by far has the best public transport, Auckland the worst.
Auckland is said to have peak hour traffic as congested as Los Angeles.
Most people in Auckland, like people in LA, drive & it's a struggle to convince people to take public transport, which is why public transport is not as frequent as it is in overseas countries (except in peak hour times when people are going to and from work). Most people from overseas think Auckland public transport is appalling.
For long distance travel it's not a case of getting on a motorway & driving straight ahead. It can take a surprisingly long time to get places as the roads can be winding, etc. Foreigners are surprised at how long it takes to drive anywhere, they figure it's a small country so won't take long.
If you're wanting to take the train from Auckland to Wellington it's super slow (about 13 hours!!), in Europe it would probably take 3. It's nice scenery though but just go by train one way & fly back (it takes only an hour to fly). |

There are cars, buses, trains and ferries.
Auckland http://www.maxx.co.nz is the public transport website including ferries to the Islands in the Hauraki Gulf
Intercity takes buses between all cities in NZ - you can get lik 7 and 14 day passes. http://www.intercity.co.nz
Wellington has a good bus and train system, you will find the main Terminal on Lambton Quay in the city.
Getting between the North and South Island you take the Interislander Ferry, or the Bluebridge ferry.
You can also fly pretty much anywhere in NZ within an hour on Air New Zealand or Pacific Blue.
Hiring cars is pretty commin, try Hertz rent a car. |

as you can see by quite a few of the above answers we are also a country full of comedians - or try hards as the locals would put (sic).
most cities have public transport as do the smaller provincial towns. getting around enzed is relatively easy. you have a host of options: rental cars, campervans, buses, planes, trains, and for the physically fit theres also biking.
hope you enjoy our beautiful country.
and oh yeah a sense of humour would be highly desirable or just plain thicked skinned - chur - have fun! |
