New Zealanders are fine with foreigner people speaking English? |
I would like to know if New Zealanders are fine with foreigner people who learn their English (Kiwi English and pronunciation).
Because my father learnt British English and when he went to England, everybody said he was ridiculous trying to imitate their accents (but he wasn't, its just because he learnt this way).
And now I'm learning English with a Kiwi teacher and i'm pickin' his pronunciation and accent.
New Zealanders are fine with it or they hate when it happens? |

They only accent Kiwi's will mock is an Australian one LOL :D you'll be fine, Kiwi's are friendly, tolerant people and will be appreciative that you've made the effort to learn English :) |

No-one in New Zealand cares about that sort of thing. In Britain accents have always been how different social classes have identified themselves (it still is to some extent). But New Zealand doesn't bother with that sort of nonsense. |

I don't think anyone would care too much.
Kiwi's are much happier with anyone making an effort to speak English at all rather than not even trying.
As a general rule you may get a few friendly digs but people really don't care that much. |

I agree with genau. New Zealanders are fine with foreigner people speaking English.
My father was a Dutch immigrant, with a strong Dutch/English accent, and I never once can remember him being discriminated against, because of his accent. |

Completely fine. There's still a LOT of poms here. But we may on occasion tease you about it. |

i love the english accent and i like the thought that you would even consider giving the kiwi accent a go (though I was never really aware that we had one)... Choice good luck with that, hope you have a good time in NZ also. |

Don't listen to the others.
New Zealand doesn't get many foreigners and people always make fun of people's accents, even to their faces. MUCH MORE THAN IN THE UK.
Trust me people will imitate you and possibly even patronise you and look down upon you and your culture.
If you don't believe me you'll find out I'm right if you come here...
But don't let this put you off coming here. I'm sure after taking initial offence you'll soon get used to it. |
