It depends on what you're comparing them to - are you from New Zealand or overseas? They're normally priced (neither particularly expensive nor cheap) if you're comparing them to other parts of NZ. But, compared to overseas, for some things anyway, you may find them expensive.

Also, what sort of shopping do you want to do? The cheapest places for clothes are probably the outlet stores (Dress-Smart) in Hornby. The Westfield Malls (in various suburbs) have a reasonable variety of shops. Central Christchurch also has a variety of shopping (in the blocks around Cathedral Square). The Arts Centre is also worth a look - especially at weekends when they have their Art, Craft and Produce Market.
