Traveling alone shouldnt be a problem as long as you are careful and take the usual precautions. So your planning on hitting the slopes over there, cool; you should definatly check out the South Island for more options and locations for this.
Are you going to work at a ski resort or something like that? then you will have no problems meeting some great people so you will never be alone.
I did the same thing but in Canada for a year, in Vancouver; loved it and the mountains were awesome! |

New Zealand has just about a little bit of everything and is a great place to be. People are really friendly, it is easy to travel and has an agreeable climate most of the year. Personally I could spend a whole GAP year just in NZ. Just enjoying the countries athmosphere and charm, but if you are passing thorugh, I urge you to spend at least a month and two months would be even better! However, if skiing is all you want to do, I'm sure you know there are better places. And just a little suggestion for another destination if you are passing through Asia: Check out Pulau Tioman in Malaysia. A really great and relaxing island with some comforts that is not swarming with a lot of charter tourists but more the backpacking kind. The abc village is great! Good place for diving/snorkeling and you can get your open water certificate there if you feel like it. This could serve as the "vacation" from the "vacation", you'll know what I mean when you start travelling... Otherwise, I'm not going to suggest a whole bunch of places where everyone travels to, you already know about those, and know enough to say which ones you will like and dislike.
Travelling alone is no worry. You just need to be a bit more cautios in some countries. I travelled alone as a 22 year old girl. I made sure to not get too drunk when I wasn't in the company of people I had been travelling with for some days, and made sure to have my vital valuables (credit cards, cash) spread out in different places so that if something got stolen, I wouldn't loose my whole footing... |
