On a vacation to New Zealand, what must I see/experience if I'm thinking of moving there? |
My boyfriend and I are thinking of moving to New Zealand (him for work) and we would like to take a vacation there to see what it's like before we really commit to moving there!
I would like to take a more serious investigating trip over a typical "vacation," can anyone give me some advice on this?
I'm going to try and think about what it is I would tell someone to see/experience if they were thinking of moving to the U.S., and from there, apply it to N.Z., but I know there are many more things I wont be able to think of.
Help if you can. This is exciting! Oh, and the "vacation" wont be a very long one, only about 10 days, I know it's short but we don't have a lot of vacation time to work with.
Thanks!!! |

First decide on where you will set up home- therefore check out possible locations both North & South Island, Suggest you travel around on your holiday to see the places you want to live in. North and South Island have many 'differences' eg climate, ethnicity , population amongst them. Decide which suits the lifestyle you want. |

I would then focus on the places you would consider moving to. I expect you will be moving to a place like Auckland, Christhcurch, Wellington etc. If yoiu are looking at investigaing the area then I suggest you base yourself in the place you are looking to move to and see how things work, run and whats to offer.
You can do things in the vicinty around the place. While there are some amazing things to see here in Nz in 10days you wont see them and they are pretty tourist based anyway eg Rotorua, Queenstown etc. If you are going to move here you will probably get to see them here anyway.
I'm still not EXACTLY sure what you are asking....are you asking for places to visit or why come to NZ??????? |

I live in New Zealand and would definately reccomend going to Rotorua. It is very cultural orientated and it would be a wonderful experience to see our culture at such a close glance. Other places of interest are Queenstown in the south Island, Auckland(to do some shopping lol) Bay of Islands up the top of the north island, our country is very beautiful, so where ever you go it will be a greta experience. |

10 days in New Zealand...are you sure you can not go for longer, there is just so much to see. However if you really are limited on your time then your best bet is to do as much of your research before you go.
My advice to you is to sit down with your boyfriend and determine what you are both looking for in a new job, home and activities. Start creating a list.
I would then go to a job site like www.seek.co.nz, and look up the jobs that your boyfriend would be looking for and identify where those jobs are located. Auckland and Wellington having the biggest job markets on the North Island and Christchurch and possible Dunedin on the South Island. But then maybe your boyfriend is looking for work in farming or tourism which may give you more choices.
I would then research housing options. Some of the real estate websites also include rental properties along with those available for purchase.
Once you have done your research you can then start planning where you want to go and what you want to see.
Here are some links that may help you in your research.
Good luck. And even if you do not decide to move to NZ it is definitely a must for a vacation...Coramandel, Rotorua, Mt Cook and Milford Sound are just a few places that are a must. |

Rotorua is awesome! mud baths, hot springs, zorb rides. Also try the south island, it is just beautiful! Sometimes whales get stranded and if your close then you can go help, just remember to stay awhile after they leave because they usually come back. Also go to Abel Tasman Park, go hiking, on the path if you go for atleast an hour there is a yellow rope where you can hold on to the rope and go down the rocks to a secluded beach perfect for swimming, beachcombing, or just relaxing. Have fun! |

While sight seeing and tourist atractions are great they are really for purely entertainment purposes. If your planning on moving to a new country best thing id do is check out the standard of living!
First think about the things that are important to you, landscape, shopping, surroundings, transport & mobility. All major cities in New Zealand are close to the sea so you never travel far for oceanic views or country! Have a look at the shopping centres (all small scale but reasonably priced) most important to me! And transportation around the city is standard (not the best) but have a go on public transport best way to meet people and see if you are comfortable and happy! so yeah TALK to people to get a feel for the place!
I love New Zealand and im Australian born! oopsy! |
