Opening a bank account?

I am moving to New Zealand at the end of May, and I need to open a bank account where my salary can be deposited.

I have the websites of a few banks, but what do I need to do and what do they need from me?

There are 3 main ones that are fully NZ owned, and each is very safe and stable. They are not operating at the whim of their Australian, Scottish or English owners.
These 3 are:
Taranaki Savings Bank
PSIS
and the Govt sponsored Kiwibank.
You may also try putting your cash into a Credit Union (Google it). These are money managers and are usually very safe. They operate at a local level, but they are also agents agents for other Credit Unions throughout the country. They work something similar to a bank, but the depositors are also shareholders and take a share in the profits as a dividend.

Welcome to NZ. Speaking from personal experience Kiwibank, one of only two NZ-owned banks (the other is Taranaki Savings Bank), gives the best service. Most other banks I've had dealings with are unhelpful to customers on ordinary incomes. Kiwibank was started in 2002 to give the other banks some competition and a hoozle-up.

I've opened a couple of accounts recently. The one I opened at ASB we had a mortgage already arranged by a broker. Went in there with ID and walked out with everything I needed. (I didn't want a cheque book, but did get an ATM card)
At the PSIS it was similar. I did not want a chequebook or an ATM card. The account was opened and ready for internet access in about 10 minutes. I decided later to get an ATM car. Went into the branch and filled in a form The card arrived in about 3 days and I just had to call into the branch to load a PIN number on it.

In these cases I didn't have to deposit money when I opened the accounts, but you need to be prepared for that. You will possibly need a couple of forms of ID with you.

Here are some banks:

Opening a bank account in NZ is very easy. All you will need is about $20 and some ID.

And when you get here welcome to New Zealand!

Look at Kiwibank. This is one of the best banks for fees. I have nothing to do with them. My friends bank with them. I am with the National Bank. They are ok and worth a look
