both are great places to live and both are unique. I've lived in the north island for 10 years, south island 14 years and for the time being i'm happiest in the south island. if you want to be close to more scenic beauty - mountains, glaciers, sounds, adventure activities, national parks then i'd say the South island.
if sunshine is important to you then Nelson or Blenheim at the top of the south island get the most sunshine hours per year.
if you are after bigger city living then Auckland in the north island is the biggest city in NZ by far (1.2 million, population) but Christchurch in the South island is 2nd biggest (population 400,000 +)
so its really up to what you're looking for

south is more like fun and stuff but north is more life style and business, i would settle on the beach front towards the middle-north region but there are a bunch of mauri on the east side of the island and they don't really like foreigners that much, so id go in the west side. |

South Island is great. The towns are much more interesting (Christchurch and Queenstown).. you have the great glaciers in the west and snowy mountains in the middle of the country. There are lovely beaches on the East Side (although the North Island is better in beaches and it is a little warmer there). If you are interested in great scenic landscapes (a la Lord of the Rings) you should go to South Island.
.....but if you go to New Zealand...you should see North and South...they both have something special :) |

The North Island is where you will find work more easily (it has Auckland and Wellington on it). The North Island is warmer than the South Island. They both have their beautiful scenery. You will not eb doing bad to move to either of these places. New Zealand ROCKS!! |

It depends on what things are important to you. Even in the North Island there is a huge variation depending on where you choose to live. Auckland is a large city so busy- it does have a lot of activity and outdoor sports and recreation as well as theatre, shows, lots of cafes and restaurants, etc. But you may have to travel long distances to work and be in transport mode for longer than a smaller place which is easy and quick to get around.
The further north you go, along with places like Gisborne, Napier, Nelson the better the climate. If you love snow and cold weather sports I would be looking in the South Island. If you are a hot house flower or like surfing and warm weather activities go north.
The South Island is very beautiful, but so are parts of the North Island in a different way.
So list your activities and lifestyle wishes and then choose based on which island offers the nearest to what you are looking for. |

It depends on you and you alone.
No-one else knows of your likes, dislikes, preferences.
Everybody will give you their own opinion, because without knowing anything about you, nothing else can be considered. |

I have lived in the South Island for practically my whole life....
Most peoplewill admit the scenery is much better in the South Island BUT more people live in the North Island.
If you like the party life, bright lights, big city etc then Auckland might be the better pick....more jobs, opportunities in that area, BUT probably a higher cost of living.
Of course you could live in Wellington.....some people might say Hamilton ( but in general its not a city of great character).
There are other larger towns around the North Island but it dpeneds on your lifestyle and job.
In the south Island the weather is cooler in the winter ( if you don't like it frosty then the south is not the best place to come. Christchurch has the most to offer i nthe South....but its close to ski fields, has a lot to offer in regards to most city things and is a good city in general. I have lived there on and off for years.
you pick |

it depends,
south is more farming type, colder.
north is more city dominated, warmer (slightly)
so i guess you'd have to choose,
but those are over-generalisations.
Tiffany G : hey, whats wrong with Auck? I think you're just jealous. |
