Places to see in your lovely country?

My family is going to be spending about a week in New Zealand, give or take a couple days. My boyfriend and his brother are dead set on one of the Lord of the Rings sets, and I really want to see either a Maori town or a museum of their art and history. Since we'll already be spending too much, where are the best hostels? Any ideas would be much appreciated! Thanks

i visited rotorua, we went on a tamake tour. they pick you up in a bus, you see a real maori welcome ceremony, they have an authentic village and lots of nice souvenirs and you see a maori concert and also a hangi, maori feast it was well worth the trip. there are also mud pools and natural spas in rotorua. also waitomo caves, there are glow worms and you ride in a gondola type boat in the caves.

Personally i would not go to Murupara, Reporoa as somone else has mentioned (not the safest places).

If your looking for a good cultural experience definatly check out Rotorua, it has many cultural activites such as 'te puia' and the 'burried village' and Rotorua has an awesome museum.

A good hostel in Rotorua i check out is xbase - it is accross the road from Kuirau park which is a thermal mud pool park, and the city is just minutes walk away, plus there is a great place to drink called the lava bar on site! http://www.stayatbase.com/base-hot-rock-rotorua-hostel/

For more Rotorua information check out www.rotoruanz.com

Good luck and enjoy your stay :)

For places associated with Lord Of the Rings, get a copy of the LOTR Location Guide Book by Ian Brodie.

Almost all of the Lord of the rings sets have long been dismantled except from my understanding the Hobbit village in South Waikato.

If you're interested in Maori culture and heritage let me recommend Rotorua. The east cape North of Gisborne (Ruatoria etc...) still has much Maori character.

If you want Scenery try the South Island. The Canterbury plains, Queenstown/Wanaka, central Otago... pretty much anywhere.
In the North Island the Coromandel/Bay of Plenty or the Far North, especially in Summer are extra scenic.

If you want to visit towns where the population is predominantly Maori then go to Murupara, Reporoa, Whakatane - all in the Bay of Plenty. Youth hostels are great to stay in if money is a problem for you. I believe you need much more than a week in New Zealand - Godzone - why not save a bit more and spend 2 to 3 years!

Te Papa museum in Wellington would be ideal for you to visit. Do the Cable Car trip while in Wellington as well.

Presuming your in Wellington do a day trip or stay over night in Picton on the ferry several sailings a day from Wellington approx $65 one way
