Question for people from Auckland New Zealand and Wellington ? |
Hello I am trying to collect as many information as possible about New Zealand. I would like to know how much accomodation cost in Auckland and Wellington.
What are the posh areas, the" cool" areas (affordable and trendy), the areas that are to be avoided (tough neighbourhoods). Many thanks |

I've being living in New Zealand for 14 years, and right now I'm deciding whether to move to Auckland OR Wellington myself!
I've been to Auckland many many times. It's where most businesses' headquarters are in New Zealand. Auckland city is New Zealand's business central. so that's a career factor that you might consider.
Auckland has many cool shops and things going on, due to business promotions and such. I only know the CBD and New Market semi-well. New Market is less glamourous than the CBD but is known as being more fashion centered.
Wellington, I visited for 2 days last year.
......and it was the best place i've ever been to!!!
I couldn't believe such a perfect city existed. Wellington CBD was amazingly clean, the people were ALL extremely polite and seemed like intellectuals. Wellington has a more English feel than Auckland, it being the capital and all. Wellington really is a beautiful city, as well as the CBD, there are lots of beautiful nature surrounding it. Wellington is known as the culture and fashion centre of New Zealand. It has the national museum, the parliament and many art/fashion etc shops and galleries.
In short, what i think:
[POSITIVES]
AUCKLAND = business. fashion. media. extremely mixed group of people.
WELLINGTON = culture. fashion. amazingly beautiful. clean. polite and intellectual people.
[NEGATIVES]
AUCKLAND = the city area is dirty and air polluted by New Zealand standards. I don't have the numbers but by instinct i think Auckland is the most expensive place to live in New Zealand. South Auckland is infamous in New Zealand for crimes. Central Auckland is far from South, though.
WELLINGTON = it is also known for its ridiculously steep hills, some which are roads to drive on! Also known for its ridiculously strong winds, when i was there i was almost pushed over by the wind many times! though it was kind of during a storm.
Hope that helps =] |

Auckland is just another big city miss it all together, Wellington is 10times better you are looking $80-200 a night for hotel motel, or you can got to backpackers around 25-50 per night NZ is not that tough you will be fine just miss out south auckland
Waiheke island, Napier, Taupo, christchurch, top of north island are all good |

I went to south Auckland recently although there are a few ok areas I couldn't wait to get out . The shops where terrible . So Northern beach areas for Auckland. Wellington I love Wellington on a nice day OOH the weather can be miserable but I wouldn't go to porirua Id go to Ngaio or nearby Croften downs Khandallah or Raumati although raumati is out a bit it has better weather Ngaio has a bit of shelter as well |

well i live in auckland. i have no idea about the prices though. Basically avoid south auckland. thats typically where all the gangster and gangs hang out. actually, it just has a really bad rep. I fricken hate auckland city, dont live there (i just hate cities in general)! you should live on the north shore which is like 20 minutes away from the city. Uhhhh basically every where on the shore is good. close to heaps of beaches. i think housing is expensive evrywhere at the mo.
Never have i been to wellington, just hamilton, and thats close enough for me. |
