I don't like it. t will increase the prison population and burden the taxpayer further with people who might not really need to be jailed.
But I don't feel strongly enough about it to really get upset about it, and some of these hoods need a shock to the system. |

The Human Rights issue? please, I'm sick and tired of hearing this. What about the Human Rights of honest people? The ones who get attacked etc? |

Great idea.
If any ethnic communities are offended by, well and good. I've been offended by their lawlessnes and attitudes for long enough.
Note that the system as envisaged in NZ is nothing like the system in California. It appears to be fair on everyone (including surprisingly, the offender). |

I think it is too generous. Surely you can learn a lesson after one strike. |

I think it's a fantastic idea. The system in NZ is far too soft.
As for our international reputation - most countries have a far tougher stance than NZ. In most other places, life actually means life - or a death sentence. They'll probably congratulate us for finally growing some balls. |

I think it is great. The system is just too cruisy, look at the statistics for re offending. Look at the statistics for the heinous crimes committed, and you will see a link between prisoners on parole and the ghastly crimes committed whilst paroled.
Some people cannot or will not be rehabilitated. They are either unable or unwilling. Maybe the ones that are unwilling will think twice about committing a home invasion where a entire family is brutally killed, if there is a chance they will be locked up and the key thrown away. They will stop stealing cars, dealing drugs and robbing old ladies on the street.
And for the ones that cannot be rehabilitated, great, keep them off the street. If they are incapable of giving anything positive to the community, if they are capable of only bringing pain and crime and grief to the victims, then they should have no place in society.
We could kill 2 birds with 2 stones here. Instead of out sourcing to China for the manufacturing of goods, how about we employ the prison population.
3 strikes and you are out. Awesome. If criminals don't get the message, then they should spend their days making gym shoes, t-shirts, hand bags and little furry kiwi and sheep nick nacks.
Buy New Zealand made, and be confident that your possessions will still be in your house after a weekend away, and not being sold out of some criminal on paroles car boot.
If anyone needs convincing, let me remind you of the Mt Wellington-Panmure RSA murders and attempted murder on on December 8, 2001.
William Dwane Bell is a prime example of the kind of people this legislation is trying to keep off the street. If he had never been paroled after his first 3 crimes he wouldn't have been able to go on and commit 99 other recorded offenses, including the above mentioned. |
