It depends, Australia is probably cheaper for most consumer goods & food & public transport & cars. And the salaries are higher there. But if you are buying a house then Melbourne & Sydney prices are extremely high (but Brisbane is good).

NZ is much cheaper for housing. Auckland is the most expensive as it's the largest city & has higher salaries but it's still way cheaper then Sydney or Melbourne. Wellington in NZ is a good place to live (although the weather is not good most of the year) & there housing is way cheaper than Auckland.

If you are a nice person I don't think people will care about you being an Australian. People generally just don't like the arrogant, loud & vulgar ones. People will probably tease you a wee bit, but only in fun. I lived in Sydney & frankly I got open hostility once people discovered I was from NZ. You won't get that here though. There are more & more Australians moving here, I'm not sure why, maybe they think the weather in Oz is just getting hotter & hotter each year or maybe they're tired of water shortages? I'm sure you can hook up with other Aussies here for moral support - there are probably some organisations you can join, or you can try meeting people online or something or maybe chat to some before you even arrive.

You need a car in NZ, especially in Auckland. Wellington is great for public transport, Auckland's is terrible.

Plane travel around NZ can be really cheap if you get the specials (which pop up at any time - subscribe to the Air NZ email list & they'll email you when specials are on). Also if you book maybe a month in advance you can get cheap deals to fly around NZ but I've found even if you're wanting to go somewhere in a couple of days you can still get a bargain, you just try your luck. It can be only $70 to go between alot of destinations in NZ with Air NZ so it's cheaper than driving re the increasing petrol costs.

Auckland has ferries, trains & buses but no subway system. Wellington has buses & trains (really reliable & frequent too). You can travel by train to some parts of NZ but it's extremely slow & costs the same to fly. People only train travel to see the great scenery & for the love of train travel, they don't do it for convenience - Auckland to Wellington takes something like 12 hours!! Better to take the train one way & fly back.
