Should Auckland be the capital city of NZ?

No way. Auckland is New Zealand primary core where nearly all of our trade takes place, it's a very commercial city. My boyfriend's family live in Wellington, yet they own restaurants in Auckland. Auckland is where all the businesses are. Christchurch is NZ's secondary core.

Wellington is cultural and it's got that certain 'vibe' to it. The Bee Hive and Parliament are already in Wellington, so why move it?.

Wellington is also the geographic center on New Zealand.

If anything I think Dunedin should be the capital like it use to be!

No just because a city "Auckland" is the most populated city of a country doesnt mean it should be the capital .. Look at other countries australia's capital is Canberra not Sydney .. and americas is washington dc not new york or los angeles. Auckland is a business city while Wellington is a political city and the political capital of New Zealand. We also have the history and buildings to support this. Wellington has a certain creative and political vibe that makes it special. As they say quality not quantity. Just because Auckland is more populated and makes the rest of the country pay for its roads doesnt make it any more worthy or superior.

Why not ? the Kiwis are happy with the present situation.

Nope. Wellington, being central, is a logical location. Auckland already has far too many people. Greater Auckland has half the country's population. This overpopulation is causing perfectly good houses to be destroyed to make way for motorways and unaffordable property prices. I wouldn't like to live in Auckland, but it was still a liveable place when I first came to NZ in 1968. I agree with Wabby. Dunedin would make an even better capital than Wellington.

no....i love wellington

No it should not...Canberra the Australian Capital Territory, needs to be the Capital of New Zeland. Yes New Zeland should be part of the Commonwealth of Australia. What do you have ............? nothing not even rugby anymore. The NZ economy sucks, your isolated from the world trade get real NZ

Auckland Deserves to be the Capital of NZ.
It controls 70% of New Zealand's economy. If Auckland's economy crashed. The whole counrty would fall as well. NZ Relies on the income of Auckland, without it we would be a country behind. It doesn't matter "Geographically where the capital should be (e.g. Wellington). As Russell was the first capital up north!
Auckland deserves the right as Capital, but It waould be too much of a hassel to move Parliament up here. It is best to leave it where it is but!!! AUCKLAND DESERVES TO BE CAPITAL. As it supports 70% of NZ's income.

Auckland was the capital of New Zealand, then it was moved to Wellington. Auckland City is different from the Region of Auckland.

I dont know why there is so much negativty towards Auckland, it is a beautiful place to live, I have never lived in Wellington, or Christchurch, but I know that they are gorgeous cities, and have nothing against them. We are all one people where ever we live. Wellington is doing fine with the capital so we dont need to change it. Auckland is the force behind the economy, not investing in the infrastructure and looking after our biggest city, will send NZ back to the stone age.

I have lived in Tutukaka, Dunedin, Tauranga, Masterton,Wellington, Rotorua. and they are all wonderful. I live in Auckland and it is such a beautfiul place to live, full of history and oppourtunity. PPl shld not judge a place till they have experienced it. Like when I was in Dunedin, they said negative things, yet they had never been out of Dunedin. Every city has its charm, you just need to try it out.

No! Auckland's a bit of a dump. It's very much like Sydney.
Wellington is great! An, like Wabby, I agree with Dunedin!

I come from Whangarei and it definitely should be both Christchurch and Wellington.

Kween Latifa,
Why on earth would one make Auckland the capital again. It was once, but the very shape of the country determines that the business centre should be near the geographical centre.
Auckland City actually is relatively small. Both Wellington and Dunedin are larger than Auckland.
You may be thinking that the Auckland metropolitan area is Auckland City, but there are 4 other cities that together comprise the Auckland region.
Auckland also, has almost no unique soul. It is identical in makeup visually, and in mercantile terms to most of the world's cities. It is really only its cosmopolitan makeup that is its saving grace.

not should.. it is!
