Should I move from the US to New Zealand? |
I saw a similar question posted elsewhere, but it didn't achieve the answer I was searching for, so... I'm seriously considering moving to NZ after college. Possibly even pursuing my masters in English there. I need to know if I should do this, based on:
Are the job opportunities good in NZ for book/magazine editing or other careers in the writing/english field (or business, as it's my minor)?
Do the jobs pay well overall?
If the cost of living very high?
Is it easy to find a nice place to live?
Based on your opinion (IF you live in NZ), what are the reasons for/against the move?
Thanks! I value your honest opinion.
ps: please no comments regarding Australia. |

I used to live in New Zealand, but now i live in America. I am moving back this summer and i can't wait. I plan on going to college in New Zeland after high school. New Zealand has an extremely high education level, so you will be sure to achieve a very good degree. i also want to get into magazine editing, seeing as my mothers best friend is a manager at draft (a world known graphic designing company) new zealand is more of a hands on country when it comes to the career Field, more on the creative side as you are most likely interested in.
i encourage you to move, they have excellent student loan opportunity's there, and great benefits. Interests free student loans are also a plus.
the jobs do pay very well, only because of the cost of living. min wage is around $11/h!!! and finding a place to live is a piece of cake. "rooming" is a huge option as well.
Seriously look into it, its a beautiful place to live, school, and work. Good Luck! |

We live in NZ and I've worked in the States too. Our daughter in law is American. Our son met her while she was studying English here in NZ. I suggest that you study for your masters degree over here, to make up your own mind about living here. Studying overseas is a good idea for all sorts of reasons. I did it and so have both our kids. Pay is lower than in the States, the cost of living is lower and we've got very few grotty slums. I've worked in 12 countries and visited about 30, and I choose to live here, but that's just me. |

New Zealand is very different from the U.S certainly, i moved from NZ to the U,S...If you want the education, than i would recommend it because education there is very good. The places are cheaper than living here in America and the jobs...the jobs i don't know about but there are definitely heaps of jobs there, i know that it really depends on where you want to live, it's peaceful in most areas and people are really nice...most of the time. For the move because i am biased and love it and against because i would never want to move there if it was based on career...you just have to do a heap of research so you are informed on the most best of what you want to know and decide from there... |

I spent 3 weeks there last summer and it was amazing. The people are so friendly.
I'd seriously check out the job situation first though before moving. |

Yes, I think you should, and I don't think you should worry too much about the obstacles along the way to it.
Just do it.
I've never been there, but it seems to be a beautiful place. |

NZ welcomes educated people....NZ has a large number of locally published magazines & newspapers of very high quality- see below. Because fruit & veges are grown and sold locally; along with bread, milk etc, the cost of living is low compared to other countries....the nicest homes are comparible to some of the movie star homes in LA - but there is a large range of prices depending on the location you are interested in.
An interesting fact: New Zealand has more bookshops per head of population than any other country; one for every 7,500 people (compared with one for every 19,000 in England and one for every 50,000 in the USA). |
