I don't think there are accomodations on Rangitoto Island.
Could try the Great Barrier Island.
I recommend the Waipoua Forest, though it might take a little more than 3 hours to get to the heart of it. DoC has a campsite up there where you can stay for a song. It's got tent pitching sites and also cabins. |

Rotorua is fun, Hot Water Beach, Coromandel, Goat Island and Warkworth, Tauranga is wonderful and the Mount is one of those places you can keep going back to. |

What about Leigh, it's up north near Warkworth, Goat Island is there too, that's cool, you can dive there amongst the fish. Or snorkle. It's very small, relaxing place.
Or a bit further up is Mangawai Heads, lovely beaches etc. Dunno with the weather at the mo, but it still beautiful. |
