Avoid Auckland and probably Wellington too - Auckland's universities are both right in the CBD and Wellington's is pretty close to the city - you'd probably have to venture through it to get there at least.
As mentioned above, Palmerston North is a small town which may be what you're looking for. Christchurch's university is in the suburbs and it is possible to avoid the city centre if you go there. Dunedin's university is in the middle of the city, but it's not a big city at all and most of the people that are there during semester time are students! (If you're looking for the best 'student life' DEFINITELY go there... if you can brave the cold winters!) Massey Albany is on Auckland's North Shore, it's pretty far from Auckland itself but not completely in the boondocks. Lincoln is in a rural area just outside Christchurch, not sure where abouts in Hamilton Waikato Uni is - I think the city, but Hamilton is a smaller town too. Probably not quite what you're looking for though.
Hope that helps a bit! :) |

Ok Dunedin has a good undergrad school, but it is still a city, a mid-sized city by NZ standards...
You might try Southern Institute of Technology in Invercargill, NZ...definitley a suburban feel to that town, very small...about 40k people...
it would be hard to get work there though keep in mind...
and no it is not just a school for technology...check it out online...
Good luck! |
