Dunedin - technically a city, but not huge and surrounded by rural areas on one side, and the sea on the other. It has a great harbour really close to the campus (where you can kayak and windsurf), beaches (the closest are 15 mins drive or so from the campus), and the mountains aren't far either (3 hours to Queenstown). There is a place called the Sinclair Wetlands where my partner likes to go kayaking - you just ask permission and away you go - just 25-30mins from Dunedin. The Caitlins are a great place to explore and are also within an easy drive (1 1/2 to 2 hrs) away. As for fishing - there's the Mataura River (1 1/2 - 2 hours south) and a number of other great spots - or you can fish for salmon in the Otago Harbour. Yes, there are warmer places in the winter - but that's what they invented thermals for :-) And, you don't have to live in Dunedin city - you could live in Waitati, Karitane, Waikouaiti, Brighton, or Mosgiel - and still be within 30 mins drive of campus.
Additional: Another option would be Invercargill (Southland Campus of the Otago University's College of Education), depending on what level you want to train for (secondary is offered as a graduate diploma, primary and early childhood as bachelors). It has also got many of the same advantages as Dunedin - but with the added advantage of proximity to Stewart Island and Fiordland. |

Tania C is spot on about Dunedin, and if you want to live rural, just rent a place near Outram (cattle, sheep, and crops) and you're in the sticks. Still you'd only be about a half an hour to campus.
Not sure about having camp fires on the beaches - you still can in some places, but DOC is cracking down and prohibiting open fires on some beaches. Mainly because of some losers who made a huge mess of things and ruined it for the rest of us.
Good luck and I hope you consider studying at Dunedin. Otago UNI has been very good to me.
Good luck!! |
