I'm 17 and currently live in North Shore City.
In summer, we generally just spend all our time tanning and swimming at beaches.
People here love movies, and some people see a movie at least once a week.
I don't know if you are a guy or girl, but the best boys school here is Westlake Boys' High School http://www.westlake.school.nz which currently has around 2200 students. Though from other comments, I think you are a girl, so Westlake Girls' is quite a good school too: http://www.westlakegirls.school.nz
I looked up the genre "post-hardcore" and it is not something that is listened to here much sorry. I have found you the PERFECT example of what is listened to here on the Shore, http://zshare.net/audio/5464314422f3bb31 listen to that. That is from a DJ who plays at Rave Dances here on the North Shore (something else that hundreds and hundreds of teens under 18 go to every month or so). Also techno/trance music is VERY popular here.
Girls here tend to like fluro colours, such as http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s138/eb_funk/flurolovin.jpg?t=1236492066 but they certainly love the huge sunglasses thing which I don't fully get. But if you are from the US, then since I think you don't have school uniforms there, you will here.
You're lucky you are moving here. I'd day the Shore has the best and most amount of schools, largest percentage of teens. The kids here also tend to come from better homes than other areas in NZ.
Also, if you are truly a girl, then you will be thrilled to know that NZ's official largest shopping mall is located in the Shore! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westfield_Albany
I hardly ever answer questions on Yahoo, and if I do they are only a sentence long! So I hope you find this usefull!
I moved to North Shore City about nearly 3 years ago, so I know the feeling of wanting to know something about it before you get there!
Good luck! |

We aren't that laid back... especially not in Auckland.
Big music- hip hop/rnb, techno, Chris Brown/Rihanna/T.I./Akon/Pussycat Dolls/Britney Spears/All American Rejects... all the mainstream music you see on MTV.
Do for fun: depends what kinda people you hang with. Could be going to the mall/shops, seeing a movie, hanging at each others houses, the beach etc etc
It's not really like America at all, coming from someone who's been there. NZ is slightly behind in fashion/movies/music etc, and it's way smaller, and the weather in Auckland is crazy.
Oh by the way, if you're 14 and you wanna fit in then you will be dressing like everyone else. The year 9s [start of high school, 14yr olds] all wear exactly the same thing, they look like clones. Messy hair in a bun or out, big sunnies, baggy singlet top, denim shorts, skater shoes. There, now you look like the rest of them. |

New Zealand has many things in common with America - such as movies, music etc. Music popularity depends on which suburb you live in, but in general you just listen to what you want. There's bound to be others that have a similar taste that you do. Some artists that are popular in the States aren't popular or as popular as they are there (Jonas Bros., Taylor Swift, etc.), but the majority are. There's a lot of good NZ music that you wouldn't have heard in the US, so hopefully you'll have fun discovering that. Just listen to the radio stations with a younger demographic (ZM and The Edge) for an idea of what is "top of the charts".
As for fashion, it usually comes down to what's in fashion with your own spin on it. Most girls at age 14 here go for style/comfort, so not high heels ;)
Just something simple like jeans, sneakers/flats, a cute shirt. Or go to a store like Glassons (for a more mature teen look) or Supre (quite a young teen look), for clothes that are on trend. Supre is VERY "on trend", whereas items from Glassons can last a couple of seasons.
For fun, most girls go shopping, go to the beach/local pools, go to the movies.
Like any high school anywhere in the world, teens can be judgemental, but being yourself is truly the best way to be. As you get older you realise popularity doesn't matter (I'm a recent high school graduate) and fashion looks best as long as you love what you're wearing and wear it with confidence. It sounds like a Seventeen magazine-esque comment but it's true. Most NZ girls are accepting and you'll make friends within your first two days. |

New Zealand actually has a great live music scene - a lot of electronic and indie/post-punk artists exist especially, there were loads of post-hardcore bands a few years ago too but they've mostly disbanded.
Anyway a few NZ artists you'll probably like are:
We Are Romans
So So Modern
Ladyhawke
Bright Lights
Bang! Bang! Eche!
Rival State - they're broken up though
And a few more that you may or may not like are:
This City Sunrise
Cut Off Your Hands
Die!Die!Die!
The Mint Chicks
This Night Creeps - also broken up :'(
Also, as the guy above me said, on the shore there's a huge rave scene but I don't know much about that.
Of course there's no single way that every New Zealand teenager dresses but it sounds like your clothes would fit in with a lot of them here anyway - especially on the North Shore. It's tight jeans, colourful t-shirts, kaffiyehs, oversized sunglasses, tilted caps, straightened hair etc etc etc everywhere!
Okaaay, as for schools depending where you are exactly you could be going to either Takapuna Grammar or Westlake. These were known respectively as the garage rock and emo/scene Mecca of Auckland a few years ago, but by now I think they're both pretty neutral.
There are a few private schools in central Auckland too which you could be going to. They have good reputations but I don't think they're all that much better than most public schools unless you're a total top student.
I hope this helps you a bit, and I really hope you like it when you get here! |

Well, it kinda is like America in terms of music, fashion etc. All our music is from there and the majority of our TV shows come from the states so we're very much influenced by all that stuff. I'm sure you'll find you fit in just fine!
The North Shore is a pretty nice place to live, but I guess it depends on where on the North Shore you live, cos there are lots of different suburbs, it's a fairly big area. Most of the schools are pretty much the same, I wouldn't think there was a huge difference between them, it just depends if you go to a public or private school.
Just be yourself and you'll be fine. The majority of NZers are very friendly and laid back. |

thats to hard to answer. its like we're generalizing the whole population. we just wear what we want to wear. and it depends on what we can afford and if we have any fashion sense basically. But well whats in right now is those roman types shoes, and big fat sunglasses and uhhhh meh i dunno.
for music. i think electornica and techno are really comming back in strongly. every song i hear has like an electro element to it. Psh.
fun? well We are surrounded by beaches, they are everywhere. or we go to the cinamas, malls, hang out in town uhhhh hmmmm. |

Teens in Auckland sniff glue and tag people's properties.
Only joking...
It's a big sprawled out mess like Los Angeles, so while there's not much 'hanging out', cafe's, and all that there's lots of parties at people's houses. |

just be yourself and you will end up hanging with cool people. if you are a follower you can hang out with dumb bitches |

In some ways it a little like America but in a good way!
We are laid back, easy going. Most people dress nice in Auckland, im a bit of a surfer so i always wear boardies and a shirt in summer. Jeans a a nice dress shirt other times.
Auckland has heaps of differant cultural groups, try to avoid South Auckland lol. |
